The BA (Black Australorp, by the way, TT) lays pretty darn well, too. I actually heard that a BA holds the world record for laying.. ?? Not sure how true that still is now that we have all these hybrids.

The Barred Rock is the only one I have that lays XLs and I certainly don't want to be missing THOSE eggs, but they are just ridiculous... they stand on my porch and will actually get increasingly louder until I throw something out there for them. I created monsters!!

When I get home, my ameraucanas start making a racket until I feed them. Sometimes when I'm in the back yard and I haven't fed them it sounds like I'm living in the jungle. cc... is that the same BR you got from me or a different one?

The winds are gusting 40mph here, supposed to be 28 tonight and maybe 25 thursday night. Glad I was tardy with planting since with this wind it'd be hard for me to keep it covered for protection. Brrrr...

Needless to say, I'm a bit worried. I lost several juveniles with the last freeze.

Yesterday we got up and Buck, my 9 year olds baby goat had died. At first I thought he got something but after thinking about it all day, I suspect he choked. We had a proper funeral for him. We burried him under the old mesquite tree in the corner.

Today is my 8 year wedding anniversary. I think I married a great guy.

I am a little concerned about our chickens, as well. It's supposed to be 17* here tomorrow night. At least it won't be raining.

Well, I just went out and covered some of the plants with old feed sacks. The wind was blowing so hard they probably won't stay covered. The lemon tree was looking pretty sad already. I am not having a lot of luck with the citrus this year. First a hail storm in October and now a hard freeze.

Remember to leave the outside faucets dripping a little so that the pipes don't freeze.

Noskiveez, I think both you and your hubby, married great people.

With the wind blowing so hard last night, I went into the big coop to check on the girls and they were all in one corner of the coop on roosts huddled together. If I had a bigger run, I could have more chickens... :0)

I watered real good but the wind blew everything off, so I'll be back out there early watering again.

Windy here too! I went out near midnight last night to replace some sheets that had blown off. Thanks for the suggestion of Christmas lights! I had an extra roll and put them under my broccoli and cauliflower. I have my old brooder lights under the cold frames for most of the other veggies. I'm not too worried about my chickens. For some reason they seem to really like this cold weather. Of course, I might think differently if I had chicks right now, like I did at this time last year. Every time it gets cold, I remind myself of how we raised chickens in MI without ever heating and I don't think we ever lost a bird to cold.

My chickens are getting into full swing with their egg laying too! I got five eggs from my six girls yesterday. I haven't gotten five eggs in one day in months. Hopefully, this cold snap won't slow them down too much.
