Every time you post I'm going to have the Beastie Boys stuck in my head.

That isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Makes me worried for the summer. Our year-olds were just fine.

BTW, 2 of the 3 Japanese Bantams that we're sort of trying to find homes for are broody.

I haven't had to deal with this before! trying the water technique, taking them off the nest multiple times, holding 1 in each hand and doing semi-synchronized 'broody chicken' dances with them. I thought maybe they'd get embarrassed, but they just made their pteradactyl trill noises at me and didn't care!

Happy Sunday!

My 1 1/2 year olds were fine too.
The young ones thought I had played a mean trick on them. They acted like they didn't know what to do all day and followed me around panting.
I guess they are still young enough to think "mom" can fix anything.

That's it exactly! They just followed me around, made squealy noises and panted at me all day! I kept saying "what?? go relax in the shade already!?"

The older ladies would come over, inspect me to see if I had bugs or treats, and wander off disgruntledly (is that a word?!

) when I didn't produce any.....

Yesterday I:

Put in misters for the chickens.
Created a "goat house" roofed with air-flowable (its a technical term) seagrass mats.
Moved the water trough into the shade.
Installed a recirculating spray fountain into the water trough.
Zip-tied this year's oscillating fan to the coop wall, and plugged it in.

It's not Mahonri's air-conditioned chicken pamperer, but it's close

---Actually, last year I found that if a chicken was going to croak from heat stroke, it was going to do it within the first 4 days of over 100 degree weather. Cross your fingers!

I just let my silkies and silkies-that-are-not out of the coop for the first time. I think every raven in the neighborhood flew over and spotted them so back in they went in less than 5 minutes. Just as they were having fun tearing into a dandilion plant. One is a runt and a third the size of the others. If it does not get some size to it I can see it is going to be very high maintenence just keeping it safe from predators. What do you do with your unwanted birds? I have a couple from this batch that are obviously mutts but do not have the nerve to yank their heads off. And another question for those of you who raise and sell or to give away, what is the best age to place them on Craigslist?

My motley crew of silkies, runt in front.

Just come to BYC and ask if anyone wants them. Chickens are like potato chips, and chicken people have 0 will power.
