So here's a couple of questions for all of the "rural chicken keepers":

What kind of dogs do you have to protect your free-rangers? What kind of dogs have you had the best luck with in regards to them NOT trying to eat your chickens?

Hopefully she will be okay. We see a lot of kids who are near drowns that end up pretty much brain dead, even though they are "alive" they can't eat, walk, talk or do anything purposeful. It all depends on if there is still a heartbeat when paramedics arrive, if not, it's a really bad sign, even if they "get them back" it usually is not a good outcome. There are exceptions, but not that many.

I think it depends on the dog as much as the breed. If you find a low prey drive dog it will probably be fine. We have a lab and 2 chihuahuas that are fine with the chickens. My neighbors have Jack Russel Terriers that attack and try to eat anything they can catch (even their tortoise which has to now take turns outside).

I have a lab that is a bit hyper still and I've been reluctant to introduce her to the chicks because she loves to chase birds in the yard. I also have a Shiba Inu that my hubby introduced to one of the Jap. Bantams & she proceeded to try to have a little taste of chicken foot. LOL chick wasn't hurt but I didn't think it was funny (DH thought it was hysterical).

So I just thought I'd check on here & see waht other people had. Thanks for the info

I have 3 dogs. We have a mutt that is a mix of just about everything. She is great with the chickens and keeps the coyotes away. Then we have a Belgian malinois that is a retired customs narcotics dog. He is great with chickens, but clueless about keeping predators away. Our third is a German shepherd mix. She is good as long as we are with her, and an excellent guard dog for the family, but I wouldn't trust her alone with the chickens. I think it just depends on the dog.

"We" have a choodle (chihuahua x poodle) that is the omega animal in the peck order. She runs from little cockerels and pullets just giving her an experimentation peck, and from then on they get a wide berth.

The only way Choodle will protect the chickens from predators is by "taking one for the team", if the predator prefers the taste of dog over chicken....
