Sorry we missed you, it was great. Stay tuned, we'll do it again next week somewhere else. I think it's at McClintock and Baseline (?) Seattle Coffee? 8 O'Clock?

AzMMotoGirl and SonoranSilkies it was great meeting you! Enjoyed our coffee time. Next week I may bring my bestfriend nearlysister Christine to join us, you all can help me corrupt her to our way of chickenhood! My almostniece Jenna wants chicks in the worst way. Heh heh heh..

Hi All,

Just getting started with Back Yard Chickens in North Phoenix.

My girls:

I posted in What Breed for some 7 week old girls I rescued yesterday. https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=6293862#p6293862

I
have so many questions a few of which I asked in the first post.

I have tried searching for some answers but I might not know the right terms so I'm having limited success.

I noticed when searching for what to feed the girls that scratch seems to be a no no here. Is that all year or just when temperatures get above a certain point? What temperature is too hot for scratch?

What is the best food to feed them in the summer? Is it age dependent?

Right now the girls are in a box and not very happy, but I am hesitant to take them out until I have finished my coop. There is a neighbors cat that decided to eat a nesting dove and her eggs who refused to listen when I was telling her to make her nest in the bigger tree up higher. (It killed me to watch her nesting I knew it was only time until that cat got her but there was little I could do.) Also the fence has some gaps around gates that the girls might be able to get through. Is there much that can be done to make them more comfortable these next couple of days while I finish the coop?

I plan on having a total of four chickens this year while I am learning. Should I build 1 or 2 nesting boxes in the coop?

I asked this question in the other thread, since I have two girls now when I finish the coop I plan on introducing the second two girls so they all go into the coop at the same time. Is that the best way to do it?

Is it ok to put them in the coop now while they are about 7 weeks old? If not how old should they be?

I'm planning on picking up two more girls about 7 weeks old so they are all about the same age. Is that best or should I also put a hen in with them?

I have read that using Diatomaceous earth is good to keep mites, lice and other bugs off the girls. How old before they can be dusted, and is it a good idea to dust the coop and their feathers with it?

I hear them chirping and feel so bad I can't let them out. They already have such strong personalities.

I appreciate all the help.

RR

I am shocked! Is it possible they meant 6 days, verus 6 weeks? I can't imagine anyone thinking 6 week old eggs would hatch!

Hi Ready Ren - Congratulations on becoming a new chicken owner. My answers are in bold, next to your questions.

Edited to add: I couldn't see your pics before - now that I can, it looks to me like your chicks are a little younger than 7 weeks - I think they're closer to 5 -6 weeks of age. They should be able to sleep outside in your coop once they are fully feathered (usually around 6 weeks of age)

I have tried searching for some answers but I might not know the right terms so I'm having limited success.

I noticed when searching for what to feed the girls that scratch seems to be a no no here. Is that all year or just when temperatures get above a certain point? What temperature is too hot for scratch? (Scratch is like dessert - just give them a little for a treat - and even less in the summer).

What is the best food to feed them in the summer? Is it age dependent? (yes - feed is age dependent. - Your 7 week old chicks can be feed either chick starter or developer/flock raiser until they are about 5 months old or starting to lay eggs - then switch to laying feed)

( If you have a couple wire dog crates, you could let the chicks stay in those during the day - rmove the bottoms so that they can eat the grass)

I plan on having a total of four chickens this year while I am learning. Should I build 1 or 2 nesting boxes in the coop? ( 1 might work, but I'd add 2, if possible, just to give them a choice and also, in case you add 1 or 2 more chickens later)

I asked this question in the other thread, since I have two girls now when I finish the coop I plan on introducing the second two girls so they all go into the coop at the same time. Is that the best way to do it? (this would be a long answer and they'll answer if for you in the other thread)

Is it ok to put them in the coop now while they are about 7 weeks old? If not how old should they be? (They are already old enough to be put into the coop, as long as you have it secure against predators)

I'm planning on picking up two more girls about 7 weeks old so they are all about the same age. Is that best or should I also put a hen in with them? (no need for a hen - it's easier adding chicks of the same age (or within a few weeks of each othe) than to add an older chicken).

I have read that using Diatomaceous earth is good to keep mites, lice and other bugs off the girls. How old before they can be dusted, and is it a good idea to dust the coop and their feathers with it? ( I sprinkle Food Grade DE in the litter under their roosting poles, in the shavings that I have in the nestboxes and in the areas they dustbathe - make sure you use "food grade" DE)

I hear them chirping and feel so bad I can't let them out. They already have such strong personalities.

I appreciate all the help.

RR.

I just saw the April Awards! Congrats Gallo del Cielo, Laree, and Mahonri! (Did I miss anyone?) I can't believe how many AZ threaders are in there!

Ah, but Gallo got the 'coveted' BYC Educator award. And his award was well deserved.
