My husband's a pushover. He'll say "no" more pets, or no dogs on the bed and then he's the one who let's them up there. We just finished brooding two batches from Mcmurray's in the house. I guess I never thought about trying to brood them any other why.

I use ACV and had heard that it keeps water cleaner, but I found it doesn't. You'll still need to clean just as often - I suspect I have to scrub more because it leaves a slight residue which seems to lead to more black stuff (mold?) growing. ACV is great stuff though - really good for the chickens!

THe acv seems to keep the scum out of the flat waterers...the ones the chickens stand (and poop) in.

But I probably use more than the normal person. Two glubs for the 2(?) gallon pan.

It's a technical measurement.

THe point I was trying to make is that the yeast infection comes from an inbalance of naturally occuring yeast vs. naturally occuring bacteria. Moisture in the ears give the yeast a boost and it takes over.

IB not something most birds carry around. The addition of moisture knock things outta whack. The IB has to be introduced, and the chicken needs to be stressed for the IB to "take hold". That is: the chicken cannot fight it off like he normally does.

Any AZ bantam breeders here on BYC? I am trying to procure some bantams for my sweet grandmother, hopefully within the next few months or so. She is interested Japanese, Seramas, Ameraucanas or Araucanas. I could possibly talk her into some really cute EE's or Belgian D'Anvers. I am looking for hatching eggs or chicks, but I would consider started birds as well. I know not many people are hatching right now, but I'd be willing to pre-order for fall. Would be willing to drive within a couple hours of the Valley for them. Please PM with details. Thank you!

So, speaking of hatching, I have a broody, who REALLY needs the break from laying eggs, so I would like to keep her that way. Rotten timing with the heat, but I'll freeze more pop bottles for her (I'll skip the banana and sausage for now). She has been on the nest for 4 days trying to hatch two golf balls, 1 plastic egg, and one unfertilized egg I put in there Tuesday evening. If I run out now and get TJ's eggs (unless someone near here has eggs?), how long do I need to leave them out at room temp before putting them under her? Is overnight enough?

ETA -Not to disparage the banana trick, which is a brilliant idea, the right size, not too round, but round enough, and, HOW DO YOU FREEZE A BUCKET OF ALFALFA ON SHORT NOTICE?
