Arizona Chickens

Hi everyone! I am in Mesa...have 2 Barred Rocks( Laverne and Shirley) 2 Americanas(Paris and Nicole..Yes they are divas!) and Henrieta my noisy bossy Light Brahma. 2 of the girls, Henrieta and Laverne have started to lay but no one else and the eggs are really small...I assume its due to age..they are approx 5 months.... Really glad I found this site, I have been wondering if we should set up the window AC in their coop...has anyone else done this?

Nice to meet you yesterday. The girls have adjusted well in their new digs. The little BLRW is spunky. Seems to rule the 2 others! Will post pics later. Have to get ready for work. I would rather stay home and watch the new gals.

. Hi! Glad you found us! I think a lot of people put A/C in their coops. Personally, I don't, but I'm home all day to keep an eye on the girls. And, we have awesome ventilation, and shade. I also add ice to thier water when it gets really hot. We did loose my favorite Marans in the beginning, made some modifications and now seem to be doing well. The girls also have rule of a nice large grassy shady lawn almost all afternoon. So I think it depends on your particular situation. I'm still new to chickens, but the folks here are very knowledgeable and super helpful too! Have fun!

Anyone here put fans in their coop to cool it off? I noticed half of our hens last night found other places then the coop to sleep so I took a thermometer out there, it was still 100 at 11 oclock. would the fans do anything or just blow hot air (ha ha)? Mine is a closed coop like a wooden shed but has windows and a vent on the roof. I'd put an a/c on it if i thought it would cool it down and not just escape out and wouldn't run 24/7.

Their eggs should get bigger as they get a little older. My orpington only had one small egg, and now they are full size. But, my wyandotte, just started last week and hers are still pretty small

Our cuckoo marans has only laid one, small egg so far. I would bet by 6 months everyone will be laying regular size eggs. Oh, mine are the same age as yours.
