Arizona Chickens

Thank you SSilk. Gallo has the vines planted in the middle of the run so the canopy(?) shades them. I'm really liking that idea.

Ghanks Gallo!

I really like the grape shade idea! Do any leaves grow onthe "trunk" / cane that is inside the run?

Yes, vines continuously grow from the main "trunk" (cane) of the vines. It's funny that an offshoot vine can start growing and it might get several feet long before they start munching on it, even when most of the other vines are beak-trimmed to jumping height. The continuous growth is the best thing about the vines (O.K., for us, maybe shade is the best thing); they have something green to eat for much of the year. BTW, chickens will eat nearly any insect large enough to bother catching. They're not really all that great at controlling explosive outbreaks though, especially if the bug moves more than 3' above the ground.

RNShelly,

Do chickens eat catapillars?

My chickens wouldn't eat our g.l. skeletonizers. I did find that a steady stream of water would knock them right of the leaves and the direct sunlight would kill them in about 2 minutes. Kinda fun to watch them squirm around on the hot dirt. (revenge I guess).

Mine won't eat them either, brats!
