I HATE THIS HEAT.

pastrymama--- I am SO VERY, VERY SAD.. that Blue Wheaten was the prettiest of the two.

Makes me want to swear. I feel so very badly for you.

I had a half day off and I had to do some catch up work done here on BYC... (it's a monthly thing I do here) spent four hours... then took a nap and thought... "Now I need to read my threads..." of course AZ chickens is always the first and now my day is RUINED. I had a marans down and panting earlier today and I got her some extra cool water and she seems OK for now... I'd better go back out and look her over again. The chickens in the AC coop are doing great. Wish they could all fit in there this week.

Forecast for Thurs-Monday.

We did. It's all set. I'm sure we could add to it, if needed. Just PM me what you want and any details.

Do you think we could get them to label the breeds? For an extra buck a wack for each breed we paid, they should write on em with a sharpie or sumptin...

I ordered from Ideal last year and asked them to mark the cockerels they had to send "for warmth". The packing slip said they were marked but the chicks said they weren't.
Luckily I could tell them apart from the other breeds I ordered.

Ok folks....

A quandry. My hubby and I are leaving *tomorrow* for work travel and will be gone until after Labor Day.

We have a chicken sitter, etc already set to go.

I go out this morning around 8:00 am, and my largest Sultan hen is wheezing has mucus coming out her beak, eyes half closed and seems to be in respiratory distress.
I bring her inside to check her out and get her away from the others...isolate her in a kennel in the bathroom with food/water and figure I will come home to a dead hen in the bathroom.

Fast forward until now and she is still alive, no longer wheezing, seems a little more alert, laid an egg in there although her eyes are still a little squinty. No more mucus either.

What the heck do I do? I am afraid to put her outside with the others if she is contagious (although they all have exposed if it's an illness). They all free range and so have some level of interaction with wild birds. Could it be something besides a respiratory illness? A scorpion sting??

Do I put her out anyway and hope for the best for all of them? We can't leave her in the house and don't know if dumping her off at a vet for 12 days is a ridiculous idea or not. Does anyone want a somewhat wheezy Sultan?

I have never culled a chicken.. If she was as bad as she was this morning, I would think that would be the right thing to do. But don't know how, and wouldn't want her to suffer because of my ineptitude. But if she's improving and/or if it's something like a scorpion sting and she is recovering from it, I wouldn't want to just cull her??

And no, I can't take her with me...and we can't leave her in the house as no one will be here....

Argh! What should I do, peoples? I need advice

. No HOA, no problems.

HaHa, thank you! Anyone who knows me knows I am not nearly so outspoken verbally. I am a writer and I take my frustrations out that way.
If I could find one outside of an HOA, that certainly would be ideal. Unfortunately it seems every time I find one, it already has an offer on it. Gee, I wonder why anyone would rather live outside an HOA.

Johnson Ranch, Rancho Bella Vista, and Meadow Vista. Did you ask anyone if you could have chickens, or did you just decide for yourself and deal with complaints when they come? I'm starting to wonder if I should try being sneaky and if I get a complaint say that the rules sounded like chickens were allowed. The HOAs main argument is that chickens aren't commonly considered pets. I'm thinking of starting a survey and will ask everyone here if they consider chickens pets, then take it to the HOA so they can see just how common chickens are.

Lots of places for sale in our neighborhood I think. No HOA and some of our streets even allow livestock! between Lindsey and Val Vista off Broadway. Nice older neighborhood, cheap irrigation, huge trees.

Unfortunately my husband's work is in San Tan Valley, so that would be much too far to drive. We may start looking into southeastern Gilbert if the drive isn't more than 20 mins.
