Arizona Chickens

One of mine did that a while ago! I brought him in and was convinced he was dying. He seemed fine a few hours later. He had had the same icky mucus that shot out when he cough/sneezed.

We ended up decided there the dust was irritating him, and he got it all out on his own and was fine after that. I put him back with the others.

Everything turned out fine.

I'd be happy to but it is in Tracy's name. I do believe she has made that offer to them .

Awesome. If I lived closer I would have added some to your order!

pdx2phx, So, this bird only showed symptoms (albeit terrible) this morning and is now much better? Personally, I wouldn't cull, but that is me. Have you been wetting the run to keep them cool recently? I'm starting to wonder if fungal infections are more common than we think, especially for us in AZ during monsoon season. A couple weeks ago I had two birds with similar symptoms that I had deduced was probably a fungal infection. I treated my two sickly girls with Oxine and it ended their symptoms almost immediately. I posted about it here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=7237568#p7237568 From what I've read, most birds are able to mount a response to the infection and fight it off quickly before it ever becomes a serious problem. Indeed, it was only my two wimpiest birds (BOs) that showed any symptoms at all. Well, I do have one EE that seems to have a spot of fungus on her comb that I'm treating with an anti-fungal creme (which is also working). Of course, none of this helps you to leave tomorrow. But maybe it won't matter because your bird is on the mend anyway.

southerndesert, what a beauty of a snake! Hopefully, it will catch lots of rodents for you. I have to say though, I'm glad I don't have to worry about rattlesnakes here in the center of town. Oh wait, I'm not so sure about that anymore.

Memphisjourney2seramas, what was inside the snake? Inquiring minds want to know!

I hope it's something like that, but after looking at her again tonight she just doesn't look good. She stands hunched with droopy, sagging wings. No wheezing, but some mucus again. This sounds awful, but I just hope she passes peacefully in the night so we don't have to make any rough decisions. She's always been a healthy, muscular girl so she's got a ways to go before just "wasting away" though. In other words, I see her lingering for a while in this state, which means we have to figure out something to do with her...

Right now it looks like we try to foist her off on friends and have them keep her in a kennel until she dies (or doesn't) in their spare bathroom. Or we try to cull her in the morning before we leave. I can't see sticking her back outside with the others at this point.

Gallo, we have been running a mister over a dirt section that the Ladies like to scratch around in for a few minutes a couple of times a day, and another mister that is aimed over some river rock and bushes that they like to hang out around in the hottest part of the day. Maybe it could be something like fungus? We have nothing to do any treatments with right now, but when I return I think I'd like to build a basic medicine cabinet for my Ladies.....

and Pastrymama, I am so sorry to hear about your hen. She was so pretty, if she's one of the ones I remember from photos

pdx2phx, no that doesn't sound like you're making conditions ideal for fungal growth. I was watering down the run everyday for over a week. I don't think it completely dried out in that time. If you lived closer, I'd take her in and care for her for you.

"Johnson Ranch, Rancho Bella Vista, and Meadow Vista. Did you ask anyone if you could have chickens, or did you just decide for yourself and deal with complaints when they come? I'm starting to wonder if I should try being sneaky and if I get a complaint say that the rules sounded like chickens were allowed. The HOAs main argument is that chickens aren't commonly considered pets. I'm thinking of starting a survey and will ask everyone here if they consider chickens pets, then take it to the HOA so they can see just how common chickens are."

We live in a part of Johnson Ranch and never directly asked the HOA but we were given all the rules when we moved in and it specifically says any animal is allowed in the backyard as long as there are no complaints. If they say otherwise I'll fight it to the end because that was one of the reasons we moved in here. I say be sneaky and then we can stick together if they catch either of us

Gallo, this just confirms how completely awesome you are! What a sweet offer....if we were driving south I would take you up on the offer.

Alas, we head north...

stay cool my friends... before I went to bed last night I had the pool looking pristine, this morning it was jammed full of leaves and debris. Did we get a dust storm while I was sleeping? Couldn't believe it. C'mon November.
