Arizona Chickens

Southern Desert

I think CA still has the seed box. Her dh picked it up from me, but her MIL went into the hospital the same night, so they may be busy. I haven't heard from her since. I hope all is ok.

I go to All Creatures at 40th St and Greenway. Dr. Bob and Dr. Ingram are great! Dr. Ingram prescribed Panacur (fenbendazole) suspension. Has anyone ever used it? He felt it was safer than Valbazen. Thanks for the suggestion, I will keep that in mind if I can't find a med I need.

I have never used it on chickens, but often on dogs and cats. It is regarded as a very safe and very effective dewormer for most intestinal parasites. I'm not doubting the word of a DVM, but it is my understanding that Panacur is not effective against the most common tapeworms. We always dispense a different dewormer if tapeworms are involved. Might want to doublecheck just to be safe.

I think you may be right. We used to use a double dose of pyrantel pamoate on the horses for tapeworms, although it's not completely effective. Now we use Praziquantel, which works much better. I think you can use this in chickens, too, in fact, I know you can. You just need to find the dosage. Tatum drugs could make the suspension, or, you could just use dog or horse wormer. Zimectrin Gold is ivermctin plus praziquantel.

It's amazing how something like a fish can act like a dog. But they do!
My grandmas Oscar got to where it knew my foot steps and would go nuts when I was near his tank. I loved that fish!

I used to work at Tropics of Tucson, they had the huge pacu. It was a sad day when it passed away. I was no longer working there, but heard it on the news and cried. Funny how you can get attached to something like fish.

At one point in my life I had 13 tanks all at once , the largest being 135 gal. I love fish and miss them. Looking to get a tank after the holidays.

I used to have a big koi pond. Those koi would sure beg when I walked by.I just loved them. They were huge, too.
Ok, aquaponics is on my list. Not until I move, though. I don't want to move fish and tanks.

Next Bizarre question from Mikey:

I told Tammy that I want all grandbabies here this weekend for a short time to see the peepers. She said that is unlikely but we are going to Grandma's house (my mom) and half of them will be there.

I said, "but we can't take the chickens to Grandma's house..."

She said, "Why not? they're in a tote, just put them in the back and take them over."

Me: "I don't think we should do that"

She: "Why not?"

Me: "We don't want to stress them, bouncing around in a car etc..."

She: "Won't grandkids here stress them also?"

Me: "OK I'll post it on BYC and see what they have to say."

So here I am posting it! This forum has become an integral part of my life now, not sure if that is good, bad or indifferent - I'm leaning towards good!

Wadda ya think? Take peepers to grandmas in the tote or not? (15 minute drive in the back of the SUV) (& how do you post a poll here anyway?)

they should be fine mikey, just bring along the heat source to. Any stress will be little and good for them, you don't want them growing up to be sissys.

We would always take ours to the parents so everyone could see and even my daughters preschool class. Make sure everyone has somewhat clean hands.

Well, they are saying it MAY finally drop under 100 sometime this year, so I MAY have time to spit and turn around 3 times one of these days. I haven't had time to post, can barely keep up on reading them, but I'm there with you in spirit. SO...

CA, is the seed box coming my way when you are done with it? And how is the chicken plucker building coming along?

Mikey, congrats on the new peepers, and GREAT picks. You sound like a talented guy, and if you every want to do some welding in Wittmann, let me know, I have LOTS of angle iron you could make into, well, most anything.

TT, welcome back from being banned, congrats on the new peepers too. You are hilarious.

Mahonri, I"m way beyond sorry to hear about your neighbor troubles. That makes NO sense whatsoever, since they are allowed to run free in your neighborhood, and are PROTECTED!

Meg, same thing, I'm sorry to hear about your troubles as well. I'm a 'live and let live' kind of guy, which is one reason I'm not in town anymore. Too many people don't want you to live unless you live by their rules and standards.

Gallo, I want to be aqua buddies too! I had plans to build a pond where I am, but sine I'm now in the middle of moving to the new place, will do it there once we get done moving and the weather cools so I have some time. Do you have a source for Tilapia fry, or fingerlings, good plans for a simple, easy to clean filter, etc. Someone here had plants etc to share, so I'm hoping to acquire some starts from them.

I know I've missed out on commenting on tons of stuff, but know that I'm there with you guys.

Look at the size difference between the Australorp and everyone else!
The Australorp is by far the tiny-est of 'em all.

Hmmm. I'm really not sure about being up here...

I just get mine from the bulk bins at Sprouts orWholeFoods.

There is a spicve store at Tempe Marketplace. I've never been in, so not sure on prices, but they have been marketing big time, and I've actually been to the shopping center a few times now that ds is at ASU and it's an easy stop by on the way home.

Penzey's Spices is at Tempe Marketplace. Fab for spices (great prices & lots of freebie coupons in their catalog) but they don't sell anything for sprouting. If anyone is in/near north Mesa there is Nature's Finest- a great health food store on Brown/Gilbert in the same plaza as Sprouts. They had several types of sprouting seeds. Preparing Wisely on Mesa drive btw Main and B'way also sell sprouting seeds but they are $$$.
