Arizona Chickens

Next question...

Chickies have been getting sprouts (thanks Tracy) and pumpkin (thanks Meg). I understand that if you need to chew it (not that I'd eat either) the birdies need grit. Their coop floor is dirt and they are constantly pecking stuff out of it (including sprouts & pumpkin!). With the accidental dirt in their diet, do they still need me to add grit and if so where should I put it?

Thanks in advance peeps!

Who?

One of our much beloved AZ members.

She had gotten sick and dropped out for a while, then she came on to tell us she didn't have much time left, but they didn't know how much. Turns out it was like, ~2 weeks.

I'm so sorry to hear this.

Howdy Mikey,

Yes they are likely getting what they need right now from the dirt.

Will your hens be free ranging at all? If so they will get what they need from your yard, if not you may want to pick up some coarse sand and put it in their run or a dishpan.... Sand floor in the run is easy to clean as well with a cat pan scoop.

Thanks SouthernD. I've been planning on doing the sand/litter thing in the run/coop. I guess that confirms it.

Notice anything on their poor bald bodies, guess perhaps the new home and diet have made a change...

Here are a couple of the Grand Kids with the treat bowl...

Things are good at B&M CR now that days are cool, lots of eggs now (yes we use artificial light) after that hot summer sloooooooooooow down and happy chickens all around!

We should come up with a way to identify BYC AZ thread folks during Tour De Coops. Any ideas? Buttons, ribbons, gang signs?
