Nope, no rescue...sort of. We are always picking up dogs off the side of the road. We can't usually bring them home if they are intact males, so we take them to a local shelter w/ a donation. We bring them home if we can. We'll usually try to find homes for them, but at a certain point we ran out of people that wanted one, so we just keep them. As for the horses, we usually get what sort of horses we want, but just happen to end up with rescues.
The thing is, most people hear, or see, thirteen dogs and think of shows like "Animal Hoarders". We have to make people understand that we take three dogs a week to be groomed and everyone stays up to date on vaccines. Everyone is spayed or neutered (except for Goldie because we suspect she might have similar issues with organ malformaties like Helga). We have an order of giving them table scraps....off of forks....by age. We also, if we think an animal is sick, take it to the vet...if we can check symptoms and take care of it ourselves we do that, though. Even then, the last dog to get sick was Helga. Before that it was...Ellie, a year previous. And they are fed everyday in seperate areas by how fast they gobble up their food (we have the quick eaters, the slow eaters, Mille b/c she won't eat anywhere but her room - LOL, and the babies). Also keep in mind that they have an acre just for their backyard, and they have doggie door to go in and out of the house whenever they'd like.
Okay, done justifying (not that I really felt the need to do it here).
G-frog - don't forget who you're talking to - no need to justify anything about excessive animals around here!
I didn't really...I'm just used to it! You don't know how many people treat me like I'm crazy after I tell them we have 13 dogs. I've literally have had people be like, "OH. You're one of those." And the nose goes stuck in the air like I actually smell of dog.
Of course, I'm sure it'll only get worse when we add the chickens.
Me: "We have 13 dogs and 25 chickens!"
Snotty Other Person: "Ew!" *runs away*
Yep...uh huh. LOL
