HELLO HELLO ANNA~~ My Fellow Tucsonian!!

I am in central Tucson also...Glenn and County Club area!!

Right now they have lots of chicks at OK Feeds on Dodge and Ft. Lowell. I go there just to watch the chickens play.

Best wishes to all of us on finding inexpensive building materials. If you call the City and find out when the next "Bulky Brush Pick Up" is due in your area, you can often find lots of neat building materials just out on the curbs that everyone wants to be rid of! I have found lots of neat stuff to use in my garden that way.

I will be out there seaching with you!!

You can email me and maybe we could get together and talk about chickens!! If you get your chickens before I do, maybe I can come play with your chickens???

I still have work to do on my husband before I will get him to agree to keeping chickens in the backyard!!

Here's Mesa's rule:

You may have up to 10 chickens on the first one-half acre or less provided any enclosure is at least 40 feet from any neighboring residence, any coop is at least 75 feet from any other residence, it is kept sanitary and they are not allowed to run loose or create a noise disturbance. A rooster is also allowed as long as it does not violate any of the above regulations. (See Mesa City Code 6-4-20A, C, D, and E).

Welcome aboard Anna!!!

Last November I knew nothing about chickens, either. We started out with 4 show chickens for my son, who joined 4-H.

Everything I know about chickens, I learned from BYC. Lots of good info.

I got 3 of our chickens from OK Feed when they were 2 mos old, they are now 8 mos and all are great layers. I have a buff orpington, barred rock and a red sexlink. The BO is the most docile of all of our chickens. She is sooo sweet. Be sure you get a couple of them. My red sexlink lays the double-yoker once every couple weeks. My barred rock is the least friendly, but she is also a good layer.

Good luck on your coop project and finding just the right chickens.

Hey, Arizona Chicken Folks, anybody want a couple of really nice, healthy, Black Astrolorpe Roos? They are both about 15 weeks old, handsome fellas and nice composition. One of them is really mellow and nice with the ladies and would make a good flock Roo, the other would make a good dinner in about a month or two. They are both in Flagstaff and I will give them to whoever wants them.
I don't know if this is the right place for this, but I dont want to wring their necks, and I dont need all the roos I have ended up with.

Calling all AZ chicken owners!!

Is anyone else having a problem with chickens sneezing with stuffy noses?

I have 3 of my layers, 2 of our show birds and at least 1 teen who have stuffy noses and are sneezing.

I recently had to treat them for mites, so I am not sure if it is the dusting we had to do, or if they are all getting colds. Their coop has a sand floor , and I do hear an occasional sneeze, but nothing like the past couple of days.

I just started giving them Terramycin today to see if that helps.

Just wanted to know if anyone else was having a problem. Thought it could maybe be due to the weather, too.

My Red Star has been sneezing lately but today she looked better.

I am amazed at how well my chicks have done this summer.

I figure doves and pigeons and roadrunners all do well here in the summer so chickens should be able to handle it too.

My chicks are 12 weeks old now... they'll be 3 months next week so the end of September I should start getting eggs!!!

My son cut the front yard grass today and we gave them some of the cut grass next to their run. They were eating it like crazy.

I also sprinkled some DE in their run and it doesn't seem to smell as much... maybe it's all in my head.. I don't know. I also sprinkled DE in the coop and put a little in their feed last week. They seem healthier this week to me. ... again, maybe it's just in my head.

I really enjoyed just sitting and watching them today after I cleaned and mopped the coop. They seemed real content and all of the clouds that blew in from the southeast kept us cooler today. Hopefully we'll get some rain tomorrow... we need it.

Thanks everyone for the kind welcome!!!

We got our coop pretty much together. We ending up buying a bunch of pre-made 6' x 6' panels off of craigslist and nailed them against a wall. Then added some old corrugated metal for the roof.

We still need nesting boxes, but that's about it.

We also have 6 sweet little girls (I hope!)
2 six week old White Rock bantams
2 three week old Ameraucanas
2 three week old Buff Orpingtons.

They are all so adorarable!
My two kids have the fun task of holding them and getting them use to people. They have been great about checking water and food, and run out to play with them first thing every morning. I just love watching them with the chickens, it so sweet.
...and sometimes when the kids are inside, I get to sneak out and get a little chicken time myself!

Guess what I have?

I have a broody RIR hen, Lucy. We still have 12 chicks from when Lucy and Ethel went broody in April.

I noticed she was sitting in the nesting box last night and was worried that she might be getting sick.
I called my DS, this morning, who said she was still in the nesting box, but somehow was sitting on 6 eggs. He took them out from under her.
I went out around 3:00pm today to feed and water and found 2 more eggs under her.

I told her that she cannot hatch any more eggs this year. She kind of talks back to me and looks at me with those big eyes of hers, and I almost give in.

I HAVE GOT TO BE STRONG AND JUST SAY 'NO'!!

I did let my DH know that it is time to put in additional nesting boxes. And I let him know that Lucy keeps taking the other hen's eggs.
