I would bring her in and soak her in warm water ( just up to her vent) for about half an hour. The warm water helps to relax her muscles. Towel her and even blow dry her on warm. I have a dog crate that I use for the "hospital" room. Keep it dark so she can rest. If her vent is swollen, I would apply hemorrhoid cream.

I just had to do this with my EE the other morning ( of course before work) After the bath, blow dry and cream, she laid an egg before I left for work. I hope this helps some.

Thanks, Chris. She is my "wildest" chicken. I'm not sure how she will take to all that. Newbie question: the vent is her anus? The egg comes out of the same place the poo comes out? I know, I know, It's crazy I don't know for sure.

Also, there is NO WAY I can bring her inside to bathe her, not without starting WWIII at my house with my DH. Of course if it's either that or a dead chicken, I'll go with WWIII. She is eating and waddling, even took a dust bath today, she's just so big and it looks like she's trying to push something out.

Petra, Do you have those "hospital bucket/basins" ? They are usually pink or gold. She oughta fit in there. I just put my gal in the kitchen sink and talk with her. They will calm down once you get her in the water. Yes, the same place poo comes out of.

If is was warmer out, you could soak her outside. DH should be sympathetic to her issue. It kind of like you being her midwife. Maybe he would understand that?? Good luck.

He just took two of the boys on a bike ride. I think I can manage it now. I'm going to try to gently massage her belly first. I think I have a rubbermaid container around some where.

Ok, so I just caught Blackie, her abdomen feels like a water ballon, soft and squishy. I hope she doesn't have a peritonitis. Does anyone have any experience with this? She's a 32 week old BCM who hasn't begun to lay eggs yet but spends a lot of time in the nesting box. She is otherwise acting normally.

My pullets usually spend time in the nesting box before they actually lay an egg. Is her comb red or pink? If she is acting normally and looks fine, I would just keep an eye on her (and on the nest box for an egg).

Here's a couple of pics. She also has poo on her fluff, which she never has had before. Maybe she just has a lot of junk in her trunk...

What do you think? Am I just being a paranoid first time chicken mama?

No, she's gorgeous and there's a problem.

Soak in hot water. After she is wet and warm, I'd put some vaseline or KY jelly on my finger and carefully go up in to see what you can feel...

CUT FINGERNAILS BEFORE DOING ANYTHING INTERNAL!

the lower tract is usually for feces/urine, the upper tract is where the eggs come.

Are you sure that what is hanging on to her butt feathers is poop or do you think it could be broken egg?

All three of those girls are real pretty!

.........edited to add caps..........

FAIL!

I took the wineabator apart to the circuit board and swapped out the fan, which still doesn't work. I need a way to get a fan in there or get the existing fan working.
