Arizona Chickens

I have five of the auto watering nipples that I think almost everyone else has around here. Orange with a metal pin. If you look at my coop link you will see how I have it set up with a two gallon bucket (planning to hook it up to continuous feed) and about a five foot section of pvc pipe. The nipples are spaced out about one foot apart. I was wondering does anyone else have a problem with the nipples constantly dripping? The ground below them is always wet and there's enough to make puddles so I see my girls drinking out of the puddles sometimes too. That can't be good right? Do I have bad nipples? Too many nipples in my pvc pipe? I plan on getting some sod to put in the run area soon so maybe it's no big deal after that.

I've heard there are better brands than others too. I couldn't tell you names though. Mine don't leak, they don't get used though either.

I was just comparing them

Do they have lady's style t-shirts? I cannot handle the necks on typical ones, and would be willing to pay extra. I would want adult small. In whatever colour (except orange) you choose for the rest of them. And I agree with whoever said that you make the call.

Here is the link to the ladies styles. Pick out a style & I'll include it!

I'll wait to add you to the spreadsheet so I don't get any more confused than I already am.

I just got mine off of ebay. I wound up winning 2 auctions & somewhere around here I have 16 more of the silly things kicking around.

Of course I cannot find them (easily) but I think they all must have to screw together in order to assemble them.

I guess they could have been glued or welded - give unscrewing them a try first.

The nipples really shouldn't leak, but they can for a variety of reasons. First, do you have the screw in type like this, or the push-in type with the rubber grommet, like this? Second, exactly where is it leaking from? If it's coming from where the nipple meets the pvc and not from the interior part of the nipple then it is an issue with the size of hole you drilled. I think that size makes a difference too. I don't know if it's true or not, but I read out there somewhere (in a couple places) that the screw-in nipple was originally designed in the Netherlands and the hole size was meant to be 9mm. I have these installed in pvc like yours, using a 9mm drill for the holes and they have never leaked. I should mention that I also used teflon tape around the threads. I also have the push-in type that I've installed directly into the bottom of buckets and none of those have ever leaked when I used the mfg. recommended 11/32" for the drill size. The nipples can leak from the inside mechanism for a few reasons. First, they should be completely vertical to the ground. Deviation from vertical orientation can prevent the little ball inside from falling into it's socket and shutting off the flow of water. Second, as Mikey said, there might be something like sediment caught inside that mechanism too, which can prevent it from sealing. Sometimes just wiggling them a bit will work it out. Over time, calcium can build up around that area too, which might ultimately cause problems. Third, if the water pressure on the nipple is too great, it can leak. I would wonder if you brought your bucket down lower to the level of the nipples if that might help. The nipples are designed to work best at something like 0-5 psi.

ETA: I've also read that 1/2" pvc can be problematic for leaks and 3/4" or larger is better.

Memphis wants Tanks tops for all except the adult large
Pastry wants hot pink and the whole world!

I'm going to place the order for the shirts on Thursday - let's make final decisions by then.

Thanks!

someone else wanted tank tops too but I can;t remember who.

Ok, Mikey, I'll take 2-youth small; 2-youth xs; and 1-adult M, if you're ordering ladies, I'll have the M in ladies, if not, a regular shirt is fine. Do what ever is easier. Thank you so much for coordinating all of this! I don't think I can get DH to wear a BYC shirt. I was lucky enough to get him to go to the show at all! I can't wait to meet you all! Can we go anytime, or are there specific hours?

Everything leaks out of the metal shaft part. Some drip faster than others. I have ones that screw in but don't quite look like the one you linked to. I have the 1/2" pvc and used the teflon tape as well so that is all sealed up. I even put a few drops of the pvc glue around them. I think maybe my problem is I don't seem to have the ball bearing in mine. When I wiggle the shaft on one end the other end moves in the complementing direction like it's one piece. I'll have to try to take one apart today after work. Maybe I'll just buy some from your fist link.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I'll let you know what I find.

Add: Here are the ones I have. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005I7651I/ref=oh_o01_s00_i00_details
