Arizona Chickens

Took the new girls out for a bit this afternoon.

12 day old BR Veronica...her first sun bathe

Olivia and Eliza (both EE's-19 days old)Eliza loved flapping around without the confines of the brooder.

First time in the grass. They weren't quite sure what to make of it.

I have a Baytril question and haven't been able to find an answer online or by searching the Emergencies/Cures....and I know AZ BYCers are dang smart, so here goes.

I have a 418g Serama hen who was prescribed a course of Baytril for her sniffles/wheezing. We are giving her 0.17 cc orally 2x per day. We have her separated from the flock, no one else has symptoms. (Incidentally we aren't seeing improvement yet and it has been a day and a half/ 3 doses so far.)

We are going out of town in another day and a half for a couple of weeks and were hoping to find a way to dose her water for the remaining days of her treatment. We are having a chicken sitter and don't want to ask her to do the oral meds so were hoping that putting the Baytril in her water would work. We really don't know anyone else to ask anyway...

Trying to find the right mix for dosing in water, I discovered that the solution of Baytril we were given is 2.27% solution Injectable (not oral). Reading up on this online it appears that people do give injectable Baytril orally to their chickens, so I'm not that freaked out about it now. What I don't know is whether or not the dosage is the same for oral solution/injectable solution given orally.

The conversions I am seeing for putting Baytril in water are all assuming that you are putting the oral solution into the water. Has anyone had success putting injectable Baytril into drinking water? Anyone know where I can find more information? I am not a math major, BTW so me doing umpteen conversions is inviting disaster.......

help? advice? :)

Yes, the injectable can go into the water. I'm not at home where I can check the prescribed dose, but why not ask your vet? I do know that it needs to not be exposed to light, so you cannot mix large (multi-day) amounts. Will need fresh every day, and try to keep mixture out of the light (cover sides of fount with heavy paper or a towel).

I think what you need to do is figure out how much your bird will drink in a day, and add a day's worth of medicine to that amount of water. For example, I would guess that it is probably a pint at most in this weather (more in hot weather), so you might mix the days dose in a half full quart waterer, or in a pint-sized feed cup of water.
