The mama is a Buff Orpington, and she has big legs also.. Of course, she's over 5 years old.. lol
Starting to look like I may never get another pullet from her, just freezer fodder....

Hi All,

New AZ Egg here and a first time poster. Like most around here, my flock last year went from 4 to 9 quickly and two of those happen to be cockerels (not by choice). But that is a different story. Living in AZ and raising chickens definitely has different challenges than most other states.

With the heat of the summer coming up in a few months, I want to re-do how I water my team. Does anyone have some creative ideas on how to keep the water cool and clean?

1) I am concerned with the chicken nipples and PVC that the water would be super hot.

2) Currently, I have a trough with a float I bought off eBay to water the clan. I thought of drilling a hole in the bottom of the opposite side and connecting a sprinkler valve that I can automatically turn on/off for a minute a couple times a day. Is this overkill?

Thanks for any suggestions or ideas?

I have an auto-waterer out to the coop, as well as several large troughs. During the summer, I put a solar-powered fountain in one trough to keep the water and surrounding area cool. For the other pens, I have multiple large water dishes that I change twice a day. The chickens like to stand in the water to cool off, which of course means they poop in it.

During the worst of the summer, I flood the runs, but what it comes down to is checking the water twice a day. Fill it once in the morning, and again as soon as I get home from work. I've done misters with limited success.

Also, the solar greenhouse fans, near a water trough, work really well. Swamp cooled chickens.

Do not worry! We are far from done. We have MUCH ventilation to put in. We will have large ventilation windows on all four walls eventually. Still a work in progress, but it is coming along nicely!

laree, i was looking for those fans yesterday and couldn't find them. super duper.

for anyone that cares, i am running away from home. last button has been pushed by little fingers. course, the running away part has to wait until the fireman gets home so the children don't burn the house down and my heart isn't completely made of stone to leave them all alone. just partial stone. laree, you could just come get them and i wouldn't have to go anywhere!
