Arizona Chickens

***Update on Iris***

Do not look if you are squeamish!!! Scroll on by.

Took Iris to the vet at 5:00 and Dr. B put a needle to it to see if he could withdraw any fluid. It was very solid. He then tried to open it with a scalpel to see if it could be squeezed out. Nope! He said he would have to cut it off and asked me if I wanted to stay and watch. I stayed and watched.
They put her under and he carefully cut it off her neck. He got the whole thing off and carefully stitched her up. (he even added some "glue" to ensure it stays shut) Seems it was a cyst that birds get and it isn't cancerous. She is in the "hospital" in our living room and will stay there for a week. He did not bandage it up as he said it just needs fresh air. He also has her on Baytril for 10 days. She is very groggy right now and we shall see how she is tomorrow.

This is cut open so we could look what was inside. The blood blob is where the feather was sticking out of. The cyst is about the size of a half dollar.

This reminds me...it's time for lunch!

Ok I'm cross posting as I already posted a thread about this already.

Anyway what is the best roofing material for AZ Coops? My coop is 12 x 10 FT Slant Roof.

I trying to keep the cost down. With the ease of installment I'm leaning towards rolled roofing over shingles.

Suggestions please.

BTW I live in Gilbert

I put asphalt shingles on mine.

If you don't mind the noise, corrugated sheet metal is pretty long lasting and inexpensive.

I think for the mobile tractor I'm going to use siding and a good coat of paint.

Hi all! Just discovered there was a forum for people in Arizona who raise poultry so I thought I would introduce myself incase you see me wandering around the forums :)

I have been around or owned chickens since I was 4 years old-- started out with all the normal things like Auracaunas, RIR, Barred Rocks, Australorps, and the like...then, thanks to my adventurous step father I learned that chicken breeds went beyond what the local feed store carried. So now I am crazy about rare breeds...especially bantams :)
Just have a few boring standard breeds to rid myself of, and then my bantam addiction will be well under way.. I have (or hope to have): Cuckoo rose comb leghorns, Bantam Butter cups, Vorwerks, White Faced Black Spanish, and Spangled OEG. I also have Royal Palm Turkeys, and hope to get a trio of Spanish. Water fowl include: Runner ducks, Chinese Geese, Sebastapol geese, and apricot/pastel call ducks.

Welcome Elizabeth!

Fuzzy Bird - I voted! Good story.

Pimachickens - I'm glad your new chickens are doing well, and sorry about the dominance issues! I agree that removing the bully for a while might help. I had one like that, and after a week being separated from the flock, she was knocked down a few levels.

Hatchers - Sorry for the troubles

SEED BOX - Can anyone please send it back down south?! I'm dying to see what has been added now that it has been traded around up there!

Arizona - Very cute mom and chick pics!
