Arizona Chickens

Hey everyone. I had to cull my whole flock due to the spreading illness. I am going to let my land rest and let the sun/bleach bathing kill off any of the disease pathogens for my whole property. I want to start over, but I am not interested in getting chicks again. Waiting for so long, just to lose my oldest pullets just before they start laying? Ugh. That was a swift kick to the teeth. My husband and I would wish to get some Aurcanas (sp?). If anyone is selling laying hens and a rooster, I would love to get your info and prices.


Side note, I will not bring any new chickens to my property for a few weeks. I want to make sure that I am overly cautious on making sure the disease pathogens are deceased.

nova- that is aweful. I would order some oxine and spray down everything before you bring anything else in.

So sorry to all of you out there with all of the unfortunate problems.

I feel for you all. I have never had a sick flock and just cant imagine what is causing all of the issues. I still have my poor hen with the tumor/growth thing on her face and she is hanging in there but is beginning to have a very hard time eating again. does anyone know of a chicken vet who might take a look at her and maybe tell me if she even has a chance? I am not rich or even comfy but I do like to take care of my pets as best as possible. She is an older RIR hen and she has just been trying so darn hard to make it, she is a real fighter and I hate to see her die from starvation if a vet could maybbe remove the rest of the growth (its a horrible and bloody mess). If anybody can help PLEASE let me know, THANKS!!!!!

I was also thinking about the moldy thing. that can make them have syptoms similar to mareks from what I have heard.

Sounds more like star gazing, encephalitis or an inner ear infection, not like Mareks. Treat with metacam, prednisone or aspirin, plus vitamin E with selenium and a vitamin B-complex. (infant vitamin drops (without added iron) are a good choice). Also, has she gotten into anything that could be moldy? If so give her an epsom salts or molassas flush.

Long time no posting for me, crazy busy here. Finally catching up on the thread while I am down with bronchitis. I was wondering how everyone faired with the 100+ temp today. Looks like I'll be hooking up the mister tomorrow.

Nova - so sorry to hear about your flock. That is just awful.

Note to anyone looking for a vet in the east valley - Dr Dan Burke in Gilbert is terrific - he's been taking care of my handicapped parrot since the mid '80s. I cannot say enough good things about him.

Went to the feed store today to relieve my two broodies.

I got 2 Leghorns, 3 EEs and 3 Australorps. I gave 4 chicks to each broody. I hope they accept them.

I tried two weeks ago with the one that had only been on the nest for a week and she rejected them.

I put the chicks under the mamas tonight in the dark.

Hit 102 here today, MUCH too warm... but I took the two youngest swimming and then cooked them some burgers (and me a steak) on the grill. #4 & #5 are at a dance tonight. Got the family room AC fixed and it's nice and cool inside. I even turned on the AC unit in the main coop from 2 to 6.... it made it bearable for them.

I hate the heat.. I only got 6 eggs today.
