I think they are Preshrunk, so the water shouldn't hurt......

Fuzzy bird : I am so sorry that you have lost your precious chicks. How on earth did they get pastybutt so bad that they died from it? What are you feeding them? I have had an occasional hatchery chick get pasty butt but , have just always cleaned it off and then the chicks were fine after that initial episode. I just cant imagine what happened to your special little guys.

I have never used misters with my chickens but then they mine are not in a coop, they run free. However, when I dump the horses water buckets they all lay around on the wet ground! So bottom line is, I guess in the summer , getting wet will not hurt them at all. Even my 1 old silkie hen used to do it before she decided to go broody and sit on a nest! I will be expecting white silkie x mottled cochin chicks in a couple of weeks, if anyone is interested!!! They should be really pretty

Hi everyone, ive heard about this site so thought id check it out, So guess im a newbie here. I live in Wittmann, Az 45 min from Phoenix and a native . I raise Bantam Silkies, Frizzles, and some projects Sizzles. The most important thing you can do is provide shade and lots water. If you can free ranch your chickens they will find shade and will be very happy. plus keep the bugs ,scorpions, rodents, weeds ect away and feed YOU :). Ive seen people put tons of money into fancy coops only to have the high winds destroy them to a pile of match sticks. A simple dog run and a nesting box and roosting stick and a little shade screen works fine and holds up great. if you are hatching chicks just put some chicken wire around the bottom so keep babies in. Ways to keep them cool in our 122 heat: Misters, Fans, portable swamp coolers, frozen water bottles, heavy clay flower pot drip pans filled with water to walk in, shade screens , climbing shrubs. hope this helps

My mom is interested in one. She has a block fenced in back yard - HUGE yard & unless the silly things can fly pretty well (Can they?) it should be OK back there.

Anyone have any ideas where I could procure one?

Mikey, peacocks can fly... When I lived in Maricopa, There were some people down the road that had dozens of them.. They would fly up an perch on the roof top of their house.. When you drove by in the early,(right about sun up), tey looked like dragons or gargoyles on top of a castle.. They roamed all over the neighborhood, and got in the middle of the road.. If you honked your horn at them, they just fan their tails and stand there in the road.. A real pain when you are in a hurry.. Very pretty though... Will

The Oregon Zoo has quit a few of them. They can fly pretty high. You would see them perched on light poles throughout the park to avoid people. I have also seen them at the zoo out west and they were perched up high as well. The blue, green ones are much prettier than the white ones. They are also very noisy. Good luck.
I don't know...the white ones are really beautiful.
;) Personal preference I guess. I like lots of color
