Arizona Chickens

No but ive been wanting one. I say female because we have a female Pekin right now and I dont want to breed any. We were going to adopt one from a rescue like our other duck. do you think they would fight if they had theyre own nesting boxes...Im still deciding.

If we knew for certain that it were a female, I might surprise the family....

Puffycheeks, I love all your new chicks! The turkeys are very sweet!
I wonder if the chicks I lost were never do wells anyway. They had never grown and had no meat on their little bones but then again I didn't get to the pasty butts in time for I didn't think to look since they were with the mother. The last 5 seem OK so far.
Glad you liked my stuff toy chicken. I named him Rocky!

Hi everyone, ive heard about this site so thought id check it out, So guess im a newbie here. I live in Wittmann, Az 45 min from Phoenix and a native . I raise Bantam Silkies, Frizzles, and some projects Sizzles. The most important thing you can do is provide shade and lots water. If you can free ranch your chickens they will find shade and will be very happy. plus keep the bugs ,scorpions, rodents, weeds ect away and feed YOU :). Ive seen people put tons of money into fancy coops only to have the high winds destroy them to a pile of match sticks. A simple dog run and a nesting box and roosting stick and a little shade screen works fine and holds up great. if you are hatching chicks just put some chicken wire around the bottom so keep babies in. Ways to keep them cool in our 122 heat: Misters, Fans, portable swamp coolers, frozen water bottles, heavy clay flower pot drip pans filled with water to walk in, shade screens , climbing shrubs. hope this helps

WOOT Glad to see more of us in this part of the state. We should plan something that doesn't require a 100 mile drive to do!! You will find a kindered spirit in FuzzyBird.....in Wittman and crazy about Bantam Silkies also!!!

Hey FuzzyBird- I am planning on heading up to the shop with eggs and the turner about noon today. Have you processed your extra Marans Cockerel?? My extra guy is reeking havoc in the bachelor pad and I need to process him (grrr...yuck). He seems pretty big to me, just wondering how hard the feathers were to pluck. He is really fuzzy.

Hi and welcome to a fellow Wittmann neighbor. I might know you if your first name is Rachael?

Ok I will let Denise know. I am pretty sure what went wrong with my last hatch and this time should go well!
I could never process one of my birds. Didn't know you could do it. Should have kept him for you to do for us?

I took him to Pratts. He was a good boy but the other first rooster was beginning to tell him to GO AWAY!

My tomatoes were looking really wimpy and a friend suggested a fish emulsion to put on them. So I went to the store, found it and watered them with it this am.

That's all I have to say about that.

On a chicken-related note, I wormed my hens with Wazine-17 11 days ago. Wormed with Valbazen yesterday. Do I need to worm with Valbazen again in 10 days? My 6 laying hens have been producing 4-6 eggs a day. 6 yesterday, and 5 the day before. It's KILLING me to toss all these beautiful eggs.

My five little chicks are looking great! Lacey my Wyandotte is an EXCELLENT mother.

I let everyone free range together and no problems. The other hens learned early on not to mess with Lacey's chicks.

Last note...I ate my first artichoke yesterday. My babysitter grows them and brought some over for me to try. I NEED AN ARTICHOKE PLANT! Very tasty! Does anyone know if the chickens will eat it? They didn't seem to interested in the leaves, but I wanted to hear from someone who has experience. I want to plant one in the yard, but not if my hens will make a salad from it.

It's funny you say that. My oldest son (who is 6) has a favorite chick, the white Olive Egger. He was holding it yesterday and said "Boy, Mom, I sure hope this little chick is a girl because if its a rooster we'll have to eat him." I asked him if he would be ok with that, and he said, "Sure, that's what they're for".
