Arizona Chickens

oh no, so one of my basque roos(who i think are about 13-14 weeks now) decided last night to growl and charge at one of the twins last night. he has gotten increasingly worse in the aggressive department while the other basque roo just runs away without making a peep! but this fella, he was having a stare off with me last night, dragging his wing on the ground, then screaching at me, his neck feathers all puffed up. he bit my wrist, twice. i picked him up, got bit again, and held him like sonoran silkies showed me until he settled down, put him down and he turned around and screeched at me. i am thinking this roo is destined to be baked, soon. darn. he was way expensive too

Are you sure they're not just hot?  Panting is how they cool off. Mine have been panting recently in the afternoons/evenings, but not in the early am.  I'm in the process of adding more shadecloth to my coop/run.  And a mister.

I went to Shoppers to get some anti-biotics last night. They are out and the lady there told me that all of her chickens are open mouth breathing as well and it could be a combination of the heat and the pollution and to not treat them. This morning it's pretty warm and they are NOT open mouth breathing. Also, non of them have lost their appetites. All of this talk of sick birds has me paranoid!

I think 4-6 weeks is pretty average.

Oh, that's a lot earlier than I thought! I guess she'll just go into the main coop to roost at night when she's ready then? She has never been integrated with the rest of the flock as she went broody the day I brought her home. She is vicious to my other hens, maybe she's already decided her place...she free ranges out with them every day.

Bootsy, The darn est thing happened! This is lock down day and I went in to take the eggs off the turn table and bring up the humidity and was surprised to see a chick hatched! The temp has been pretty steady but the humidity has been between 30-35 not up at all in the 50-60 range! I did go ahead and put the eggs on lock down but I see another pipping! Well I have eggs hatching this time!

I got another surprise today!!! I went outside in an area where the chickens are not allowed and to my surprise saw my coocoo maran hen with about 8 little babies around her!!! So now I have some new little cuties ( c. maran X mottled cochin ) and Tanichca already staked her claim on 4 of them so later today they will be on a road trip to Vail, AZ hopefully to grow up to be happy and healthy beautiful chickens !!! T. - PLEASE dont eat them!!! I will try to get a decent pic. !

Yesterday in Gilbert it was pretty hot the girls had there shade, fan, frozen water bottles and the pen was sprayed every now and then no panting in my house, everyone isn't allowed to get stressed.




My Muscovy's duckling hatched out yesterday too... thos ducks are the most heat tolerant birds I've met. (duckling pic.'s coming soon!)
