Arizona Chickens

Cupcakes for a co-worker.

Back away and no one gets hurt!

Hubby said to come see this. If he didn't know better, he would have thought this little one was dead instead of sunning itself.

Wow!!! Great shots!!! By the way The sectional is very much needed and apperciated, thank you so much. I think I will be donating a TV and DVD player. When do you need to have the furniture picked up?

Anyone have any tips on keeping the birds out of the chicken feed besides using a trendle feeder. Besides giving free lunch to all the neighborhood wild birds I worry about the diseases they could be spreading. I had their feeder in the run and moved it into the coop to try to keep the wild birds out. Not sure if that will work. I figured it would help since they won't be able to go through the chicken wire and would have to fly in and out of the door. I can bird net the entire run (it is a 6' x 14' chain link dog kennel with a top cap) as a last resort if I have to. If I hung a curtain or strips of material in front of the door to the coop would the chickens walk through it? I don't think the wild birds would fly through the strips but I was wondering if the chickens would be scared to go in and out of the coop? Anyone try anything like this?

I think that heavier vinyl strips might work at keeping sparrows out. The effectiveness would depend on how heavy they were and how they were spaced together; of course you can't go too heavy or overlapping too much so that the chickens can't work it out. My shade cloth curtain over the pop door provides a great visual barrier to all birds, but the dang sparrows could easily weave their way through the strips to get inside. Although, I also wonder if it would be less of a problem now that the sparrows don't know there is food inside. They went through right after I put it up because they had a history of finding food inside. Now that those birds have probably passed on, I suspect the visual barrier might be enough. I haven't seen a sparrow inside in well over a year now. But it only takes one little bird finding its way in and showing all his friends where the free buffet is located. You are right to be mindful of the potential diseases they carry.

There are other interesting and inexpensive options for auto feeders besides a treadle feeder. Here is a thread on an interesting and inexpensive one from the UK. I bought one, but haven't gotten around to testing it out yet. southerndesert, an AZ BYCer made a similar one out of things he had laying around and he really liked his. Unfortunately, he seems to have removed all the pics showing how he built it. Too bad we lost him in the BYC platform transition. Here is another very clever auto feeder made by a BYCer using pvc pipe, some U-bolts and a golf ball (see post #10).

Also, thanks for the info about the block ice! I always wondered why there was so much variability in how long they took to melt.

Sad day.

Just sold the pinball machine. :-(
Which machine was it Mikey? That would definitely be a sad day. I've wanted one for years, but Gallina del Cielo says no.
