Arizona Chickens

hey kev, how are your basque looking? my pullets are checking out the nest boxes already. seems a bit early for that. i still have a roo that isn't crowing, maybe he is a mute or those silly silkie roos are loud enough and he doesn't want me to get in trouble and cook him up. they are getting really pretty.

Well I only have 1 pullet now, one of the ones you gave me died within the first 2 weeks and I have no idea; showed no signs of stress or anything.

So I have 2 boys who are super friendly and the orange colored girl who is very skitish around us and other chickens.

I agree, the boys are very colorful and pretty, I mean handsome.

Ok...

those of you that use Oxine -

What sort of contraption do you use for "misting" or "fogging" ??

I'm looking for specifics (make/model, etc), and can I find it at Home Depot or the like? I have been reading up on Oxine and I don't have a commercial farm/ranch, so am looking for something that will do the trick that is inexpensive, easy to find and simple to operate.

I have had my jug of it for a while now, and have no idea what I'm supposed to use in order to administer it for sniffles and respiratory issues.....

Any help/advice on what to use would be greatly appreciated!!

I bought an ultrasonic vaporizer/humidifier from the baby section in Wallmart.

I put it on a 4" tall retaining wall brick on the floor of the coop and let it run.

It would run for pretty near 12 hours before having to be refilled.

I used approximately 1oz per fill which I estimated to be around 3/4 of a gallon (which I figured was close enough to the recommended 1-1/4 oz per gallon.)

Mahonri-

Beautiful birds!!! Not sure if you saw my post, but looks like I may get Rocky back.

He can go in my bachelor pad, so he won't attack the kids (or husband) and can be rotated into a breeding pen to make babies. If all goes well, I should be hatching some more of his crested EE chicks this fall!!

Granddaughter #1 is reading over my shoulder and already whining about Rocky the Roo.

grrr why won't this post????????

This week three pullets started laying!

My Jersey Giant, my black sumatra and one of my NYD hatch Icelandics.

Soon I'll be able to let go of a few of my 18 month old hens and hens from last years Easter Hatch.

Kev,
Sorry about the pullet. I can't imagine what may have happened to her. What happened to your original girl that you bought at the fair?

I am selling some of my silkies right now. I have maybe 4 or 5 paint silkie babies for sale. one has yellow skin but a cutie. I also have several black babies from my paint breeding up for sale. I also have a really nice Grey male for sale from sanoran silkies and maybe a chick or two from that pair. for sale as well. If you are interested send me a PM. All are unsexed except the grey roo. the babies range from $20 on up depending on age. The grey boy is $25 obo and his offspring is $20 on up. Just let me know if you have questions PM me as I am really busy & can't get onto BYC often.
I also have some sexlink girls for $12 each. they are about 4 months old.

Thnx
Could you post pictures of the silkies you have for sale.... ps I have bought a rooster from you in the past

Bootzie...

I think we need an updated pic of Rocky... he is such a handsome roo. He's got to be 2 years old now ... hatched out Easter of 2010 right?

Scorpion season.....ugh!

DH & I went outside to candle some eggs last night in the Serama coop, and while we were out we heard one of our EE's sneezing/coughing very loudly. We figure she got stung probably just a few minutes before we went outside.....lucky we did or I know she wouldn't have made it.

When we went over to check she was starting to gape for breath and was having trouble standing. We brought her in and she got progressively worse, getting more and more paralyzed and more mucus-y breathing. We gave her children's benadryl and I made her all sorts of towel contraptions to try and prop her up so she could keep breathing more freely until the Benadryl kicked in. She kept seizing/convulsing so I eventually just held her on my chest for a few hours reclined on the couch and tried to doze. Fast forward to after midnight, and she was breathing better but still spazming

poor baby. I went to bed, checked her at 2 am and got up at 6. She made it through the night, but her legs are completely stiff out behind her with clenched feet. I'm not sure what else to do to help her. Her breathing seems ok, but I am hoping the paralysis is temporary, or just due to being in a weird position for those couple of hours overnight....

what to do if she doesn't get better over the day? chicken massage? chicken hot tub (in the sink) ?

We got revenge on some scorpions last night - killed several big bark scorpions that were over by the coop and probably another 7-8 in the front/back yards.....time to spray!!!
