Arizona Chickens

Still not as bad as crazy as us. When we go out and collect the eggs my daughter pats the chickens on their heads and says "pleasure doing business with you". We then go in and weigh the eggs and chart on an excel spreadsheet that I made the date and weights of each egg

. Not bad though considering that we only have 4 chickens and 3 that are laying. It's pretty cool tracking which ones skip days and watch the weights of the eggs progressively get heavier.

OH NO!!! Why in the world would you give me such an idea? I am obsessive and might just have to do this. I am a database programmer by trade and might just have to write myself an app for that. ooo, the ideas. Stop it Selina, Stop it.

Well it has been a terrible ending to the day for me! Around 4 this afternoon I let the 2 standard poodle girls out to go potty in the back yard. I sat down to watch Judge Judy and dozed off. I woke up with a start and thought "the poor dogs why did they bark or scratch at the back door, it is so hot! I went to let them in and no poodle! I ran out and the back gate into the "farm" yard was open. My heart sank. I knew what I was going to find! The Turkeys and the young chickens that are with them were loose!
I found a carnage. Bodies all over the yard! I got the dogs in and went into where Les was taken a nap, crying hysterically! He came back out with me and Gabriel the Royal palm young Tom is dead as is Goldy my red bourbon young turkey hen. One baby turkey was dead. My polish cockerel Fancy was dead. Denise's Cochin baby was dead. 3 baby turkeys missing. The two red hens of Denise's came out from under the shed finally and Polish hen Muppet had hid under a kennel we had in the turkey yard. As we were looking a neighbor down road came up with one of the baby turkeys she found in her yard under her dogs feet but didn't hurt her. The babies can fly so 3 got away over the fence. One turkey came home later for dinner. That leaves just one baby turkey still missing out there in the dark somewhere.

Blue Bell is hurt! She did get herself wedge into some safty but her tail was pull out and she has one, just under the surface of her skin, wound on her back up a bit from her tail and some other minor just first layer of skin imbrasions. She did eat a but tonight and is roosting in her normal spot. I treated the wounds. Her poor tail!

I have a hunch but won't name names that the gate was left unlocked deliberately knowing I had the turkeys out and that the poos would get them or maybe by mistake but it was human done and we here never use that gate! We are going to get a pad lock for it so that can't happen again!
Puffy, I want more turkeys.
Oh no. How terrible. I hope you get a padlock, to bad you can't pin down the culprit and press charges.

How awful! I am so sorry.

That is a cool idea.

I'd never be able to tell them apart...

Tammy called the State Vet - got a return call from a Dr. Noon.

They will be coming Friday to test for Avian Flue Virus or some such thing.

Says it cost $ to test for anything else but we could sample all the chooks into one vial and test the whole flock all at once...

I called him for specifics and am awaiting a return call.

That is terrrible! I am so sorry for your loss. I've got extra young turkeys, but I'm down in Tucson.

Silly goose - which breed lays proficiently? Like lotsa and lotsa!

I always said you were a good wife - never to the contrary!
the harlequins are supposed to lay as well as mallards(average 260 to 350), magpies do quite well too(220 to 290). they are both lightweight duckies, not small gators like SS's scovy drake. the appleyards are a heavyweight, but meaning ducks 8ish #s and drakes maybe a pound or 2 more. they lay the best of the heavyweight ducks(200 to 270). all gorgeous, but hopefully my grass is greener than the neighbors.
