Arizona Chickens

I agree with you Pima, the desert is where I belong. I was born and raised in Mapleton, lived a while in Beaverton, Forest Grove, and Hillsboro. After living in OR for 26 years, I moved to AZ and never wish to return to OR!!! I am too much in love with the desert.
Grew up near 39th and Glisan (Laurelhurst/Hollywood area). Then lived in Boring in my 20's (Yes, there really is a town called Boring, Oregon. And yes, it really is). Moved to AZ in 1998, and I would never go back. The water and green were nice, but I just can't handle all that rain. The desert is where I belong.

I wish you the best of luck in your new home. Don't be a stranger!

OMG Sonoran Silkies, that's hilarious! Good thing my (strictly indoor) dog is high prey drive -- he's the one factor that I know will keep me from going down that road!

I lost one of my Easter hatch babies yesterday, to a scorpion. And of course, it was my favorite of the bunch, a cute little EE named Cheeto.

So out I go to shoot 'em up. I'm halfway through and I see three App Spitz in the coop.

Hoppy is back!

but wait...

...wait a bit more...

how did she get into the coop? I had it locked last night & I checked it thoroughly! The area is 4 x 17 - not really big enough to hide in.

I shoot up the last of the easy ones (about 2/3 of 'em) & go inside to chase a reluctant patient down & lo and behold (I always use lo and behold whenever I can) only 2 App Spitz! No more Hoppy! What the heck?

Now either I have a magical transporting bird or Hoppy is hiding someplace.

She was under the feeder! She has been getting mauled (Probably by Meow) and has been hiding under the back edge where the feeder slopes forward. Her head is picked bloody and she is wastrel thin. Between the Mycoplasma (or whatever) and getting picked on she is not the healthiest bird in the flock.

Poor Hoppy.

Tammy said I should get the mobile coop going (sure, right in the middle of tearing apart the kitchen) and put her in it to recuperate.

I sure do love my chicken mama!

But what a circus!

Poor Hoppy...but at least now you know where she is going, and that it's not out of the coop at night (right?) Can you cache some food back there for her that the others can't get to? I have a couple that get picked on, too, not beat up exactly, but I know they have to work harder to get food

Quote: The first time she stayed the night out as I found her around the corner under the outside water-er.

I brought her inside today and set her in the kitchen sink with a bowl of water - she drank and drank and drank.

I cooked her up an egg and she ate about a third of it (still in the sink).

We took a trip to Homer and on the way Tammy asked, "Is Hoppy still in the sink?"

Of course she was. By the time we got home she had finished off most of the egg & was still sett'n in the sink.

Her left eye is all fouled up - I doubt she will ever see out of it again. I sprayed some Blu-kote on her head wound & here's hoping for the best.

I brought her out and set her on the shelf by the nest boxes. She likes the high ground.

I could sell tickets to the chicken drama show...
