Arizona Chickens

everyone on here knows that i LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE silkies. can't stand hatchery stock, don't have hatchery stock anything at my house, but that's just my opinion. back to silkies, you really need to research your breeds very well. there are many factors to consider in choosing what you need. most people start off with hatchery stock while they are learning and then move on to something else. while byc is a great place to ask questions and get advice from others, there are tons of great books for reference, like Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens. Buy it. It's a terrific book.

btw, it took me several months to talk the fireman into chickens, we agreed on 3. he went to work and came home and there were 6. a few weeks later....9. few months after that...15. several broodie hens and hatches later, i have an incubator and there are 13 chicks that just hatched in my dining room. i have a duck pen with 15 ducklings that are 3 weeks old, a silkie coop with 12 silkies, the chicken yard has 7 basque and 4 muscovy and a grow out pen that is EMPTY FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!! oh, and somehow i talked him into 2 american buff goslings that will be here next monday.

HI to all! I have been off the computer for awhile and had alot of catching up to do Here. Had alot of tragedy here. Sadly the HEAT has taken a huge toll on us.

ON one day I lost 8 real beautiful young pullets (but no roos) of various breeds, 5 heritage turkey poults, as well as all my eggs my chickens, turkeys and muscovies were sitting on. I also lost 3 of my cavies.

Sorry FUZZYBIRD, all the RP turkey eggs are a bust. ( really, they exploded).

I have lived in AZ for 40 years and have NEVER NEVER EVER lost any of my pets to the heat. Since that horrible day, everything has been stable and no more deaths. I have been using my time away from the computer to try to recover some of what little sanity I had left. Also installed box type fans , which has helped in 2 ways. It keeps the birds cooler and it has been keeping the flies away! The birds really love the breeze! NOTE : Congrats on all the new hatches/chix/babies, Sorry for all the others losses and illnesses and injuries, and WELCOME to all the newbies here. This Heat is MURDER!!!

watch out!

Sorry to hear about all your losses. This heat can be really brutal. Glad the fans are helping. I try all I can to keep my birds cool. Even with misters, frozen treats and ice blocks I still see them panting occasionally when it is super super hot. Thankfully it is going to cool down a bit in the next couple of days.

Why is the heat such a factor this year? I give ice blocks and frozen treats and showers to all the fowl in the afternoon. Maybe when the monsoons get hear it will be a bit better.
I am sad that the turkey eggs were lost. But I do have one bit of good news. I found a breeder that had RP turkeys and goin g to get some tomorrow. Should be one young tom and two older chicks. I am excited and will post pictures of them tomorrow sometime.

Freak'n chickens!

Hoppy went AWOL again this morning. After I let them out, we ate breakfast and I figured on getting her inside the house to feed her another egg & she was no where to be found.

2:00 I'm welding an axel for a friend and David (son) comes out front with a report of a Spitz with a hole in her neck.

Evidently Hoppy turned up and Meow has been picking on her again.

I guess this is Hoppy's new home.

She seems quite comfortable.

The Control Tower however is not amused...

Is it possible she has a hidden nest she is laying in and about to go broody?

Totally adorable picture

Thanks for reminding me of the birds of prey. I haven't seen any scorpions yet. I hear the scorpions like crickets.

Are there any plants in northern AZ that chickens need to avoid? I have been told about the foxtails harming dogs.
