everyone on here knows that i LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE silkies. can't stand hatchery stock, don't have hatchery stock anything at my house, but that's just my opinion. back to silkies, you really need to research your breeds very well. there are many factors to consider in choosing what you need. most people start off with hatchery stock while they are learning and then move on to something else. while byc is a great place to ask questions and get advice from others, there are tons of great books for reference, like Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens. Buy it. It's a terrific book.
btw, it took me several months to talk the fireman into chickens, we agreed on 3. he went to work and came home and there were 6. a few weeks later....9. few months after that...15. several broodie hens and hatches later, i have an incubator and there are 13 chicks that just hatched in my dining room. i have a duck pen with 15 ducklings that are 3 weeks old, a silkie coop with 12 silkies, the chicken yard has 7 basque and 4 muscovy and a grow out pen that is EMPTY FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!! oh, and somehow i talked him into 2 american buff goslings that will be here next monday.
there will be no turkeys, no goats. and no swine.
