Anyone have advice for exterminators that are chicken friendly? We need to keep the house protected from scorpions and spiders but not hurt the chickens or poision their bug snacks. There is about 20 feet between the house and where the chicken run starts and will increase to 50-60 feet once we get the new coop built.
As far as I know, anything that will kill scorpions will kill the other bugs as well. The best thing to control scorpions is diatomeceous earth, which is supposed to be completely safe for pets and humans both. Again, though, that should kill off other bugs as well. My understanding is that on a microscopic level, the diatoms appear like shattered glass and will caused the same types of injuries to the insects and spiders that glass would to humans. Because of the oil in it, it will stick to the crawlers and basically rub it raw from cuts and scrapes. Think of it like having sand stuck behind your knee or in between your toes and never being able to get it clean. It'll get very nasty and ultimately kill them.
This is a long, slow process, though. If you know of areas where the scorpions like to be, you can put down a couple of the scorpion traps for them. They are pieces of sticky paper that will catch the scorpions. I'm not sure if there is a chemical interaction that kills them or if it's just that they die of starvation. I've never used them. Scorpions don't particularly both me. Besides, we live ten houses from open dessert and the river, so being able to truly "control" them is impossible.
Since we moved in, I have minimized them somewhat by keeping my yard cleaner and all of the oleander leaves picked up. This, in turn has kept the milkweed bugs to a minimal level and that's what my scorpions were feeding on. Last year, right after we moved in, I found 8 that summer. So far this year, we've had one down at the waterline of the pool. I didn't use any other insecticides or anything.
