Arizona Chickens

Anyone have advice for exterminators that are chicken friendly? We need to keep the house protected from scorpions and spiders but not hurt the chickens or poision their bug snacks. There is about 20 feet between the house and where the chicken run starts and will increase to 50-60 feet once we get the new coop built.

As far as I know, anything that will kill scorpions will kill the other bugs as well. The best thing to control scorpions is diatomeceous earth, which is supposed to be completely safe for pets and humans both. Again, though, that should kill off other bugs as well. My understanding is that on a microscopic level, the diatoms appear like shattered glass and will caused the same types of injuries to the insects and spiders that glass would to humans. Because of the oil in it, it will stick to the crawlers and basically rub it raw from cuts and scrapes. Think of it like having sand stuck behind your knee or in between your toes and never being able to get it clean. It'll get very nasty and ultimately kill them.

This is a long, slow process, though. If you know of areas where the scorpions like to be, you can put down a couple of the scorpion traps for them. They are pieces of sticky paper that will catch the scorpions. I'm not sure if there is a chemical interaction that kills them or if it's just that they die of starvation. I've never used them. Scorpions don't particularly both me. Besides, we live ten houses from open dessert and the river, so being able to truly "control" them is impossible.

Since we moved in, I have minimized them somewhat by keeping my yard cleaner and all of the oleander leaves picked up. This, in turn has kept the milkweed bugs to a minimal level and that's what my scorpions were feeding on. Last year, right after we moved in, I found 8 that summer. So far this year, we've had one down at the waterline of the pool. I didn't use any other insecticides or anything.

I would love your company!!! The biggest are still a bit scrawny, so in about 2 weeks. I am not a pro and have no special equipment.....learned on youtube. But have done quite a few and hand plucking works fine.

Hey Bootsie. How are those roosters coming along? My schedule changes starting the 20th, so I'll have Saturdays and Sundays off for awhile. My girls are looking forward to it, especially if your granddaughter can make it.

Bulwurk. I called to cancel because I don't want the chickens getting sick and they do a pretty good job keeping the bugs at bay except for the ants. The manager called me back to let me know that they have poultry farm safe pesticides that they will convert me to. I am very happy as we have red ants and nothing natural I have tried takes care of them.

If you choose them, please let them know that Selina Hill referred you.

Quote: Just about any Sat, Sun or Monday works for me...except today or tomorrow. Husband and I are heading north for a day or two. Roosters are still on the small side, but if I wait too much longer they are going to be tough and I think it is just too hot to fatten them up now anyway. I couldn't sleep lastnight and was out on my back porch about 4 this morning. LOTS of crowing. It's a good thing most of my neighbors are snowbirds!! 5 are ready any time. Then another 12ish? that are younger next month. PM'ing you with contact info.

if any byc person wants anything on here they can have it for free today, yes even the pullets. i was growing chicks up for a friend of mine and they are not able to pick them up, and i just have no room for them now that they are bigger. i am keeping some, others you may have.
i do not have a closed flock, but try to be very careful when introducing new chickens/chicks.
oh, and one more - i didnt list him on cl, but i have a pure BLRW rooster, he is so beautiful but i dont need him. he was hatched by me from eggs from a fellow byc-er in ohio. he does crow, but not near as much as my ee roo did, and not as early in the morning either.

Howdy Peeps.

I hope all is well with ya'll.

Things have been pretty hectic around here. Feel like I've been working my butt off & I can't see any progress. Doing a remodel on the rental bathroom so our has has not been touched. School started & while I've got the hang of it (should have after 20 years!) there's still work to be done.

We lost Hoppy two nights ago. We let her live in a tote in the kitchen (or the construction zone that serves as a kitchen) for the last few weeks. I think she just gave up. We are down to 11 chickens now.

The girls are not laying very well either - only getting 4 - 5 a day now. Hopefully it is just the heat.

I bought a bag of cat food (trying for a protein boost) and they turned their beaks up at it (so did the dog ???)

Don't mean to be a downer, chooks are still great! Family is great, life is great. Just a few hiccups...

Healthy day to ya'll!

Mikey
