I brought in my broody EE for a day and placed her in a tote with towels on a clutch of eggs. After about 6 hours she stood up and was looking around the room. I figured she was scoping out a potty spot so I took her outside and she instantly did her duty. I left her outside and she never returned to the nest. It's been almost a week and she's not been brooding. Now my Jersey Giant has desided to test the broody waters and is brooding only at night (so far). However, I did find her sitting in the nest box this morning. She was sitting on an egg but it was a white egg, not hers. My EE has yet to start laying again. I got 5 eggs for 9 hens yesterday. OH>...last night I put my pullet frizzles in the nest box with the Jersey Giant. She tried to peck me but left them alone. Not sure if they stayed the night with her as I headed to bed. The pullets didn't have any missing feathers this morning so I am assuming she left them alone. My EE is a much nicer broody hen. I hope she tries again this winter.

These stories about the broodies are absolutely comical. They don't care at all what eggs or whose they are, they'll sit on them. It's amazing how accepting the chickens all are. Someday, maybe I'll get the full experience.

On a positive note, I received my new BYC Cookbook yesterday. Glancing through it, there's already a few recipes I want to try. The Creamed Chicken on Cornbread (Pg. 84), Creamy Crockpot Chicken Enchiladas (Pg. 84), Curried Chicken & Broccoli (Pg. 87), Maple Salmon (Pg. 107), No-Work Chicken (Pg. 111), and Scotch Chicken Stew (Pg. 120) are the top of the list. I think I'll be doing the Maple Salmon tonight. I have three pounds of fresh salmon in the fridge ready to go.

Howdy Peeps.

I hope all is well with ya'll.

Things have been pretty hectic around here. Feel like I've been working my butt off & I can't see any progress. Doing a remodel on the rental bathroom so our has has not been touched. School started & while I've got the hang of it (should have after 20 years!) there's still work to be done.

We lost Hoppy two nights ago. We let her live in a tote in the kitchen (or the construction zone that serves as a kitchen) for the last few weeks. I think she just gave up. We are down to 11 chickens now.

The girls are not laying very well either - only getting 4 - 5 a day now. Hopefully it is just the heat.

I bought a bag of cat food (trying for a protein boost) and they turned their beaks up at it (so did the dog ???)

Don't mean to be a downer, chooks are still great! Family is great, life is great. Just a few hiccups...

Healthy day to ya'll!

Mikey

Oh Mikey, I missed your post here. Sooo, sorry about Hoppy.
