Arizona Chickens

I am pretty sure putting my girls outside brought all the rain to Phoenix. It started the day they went to the coop for the first time and has rained every day since. No need to thank me.

On a side note...we gave the girls some meal worms the other day. Can we all say chicken crack? How often do you give meal worms to your chickens?
I would give them everyday but I forget. Mine love them and fight to get the next worm. I have a meal worm colony. It's a must have if your girls love worm...just sayin

Hopefully someone in Tuscon can help you out (I am at the other side of the state).

You have some great projects going. I love the painted white plumes and the story behing the name!!
Aww thanks! The early spring generation is just starting to lay so I'll be making decisions and getting the girls back together for fall.

Anyone interested in coming to my house for pampered chef party tonight? The guys are invited too. Hubby will be hosting a jam session upstairs so the guys (or girls) can bring what they play. Kids will be playing throughout the house and us cooks (men or women) will be watching a demo of all the cool tools and grubbing on some chicken salad, fresh potato chips, fruit, and veggies. I live at Ellsworth and Guadalupe. Party starts at 7pm. Oh yes, eggs are also on the menu.) Unfortunately the chicken is store bought.

PM Me if you're interested and I'll send you my address.

Tonight 7/24 at 7PM

If you can't come but want to book your own party or have something you need to order please PM me.

How do you start a meal worm colony? That sounds like a great idea!
Well the first thing you need, lots of patients. I bought a tub from walmart like you'd use for storage, the ones the size of a laundry basket. Fill about 3 inches with wheat bran, cut a few potatoes in half and put on top with moist side down, put in 200-1000 meal worms. I started with 200 meal worms and have a magnificent colony after 6 months. You'll have a colony after about 4. Galo is the expert and we all use slightly different methods. Mine just works easier. The worms to to beetles. Beetles lay eggs. Eggs hatch to worms. Very similar to butterfly life cycle. You can search on Darkling Beetle on the web

Lifecycle has 4 steps
1. Egg
2. Larvae (meal worm)
3. Pupa
4. Beetle

Thank you! I will be reading these. I may have to hide this project from my teenage daughter - this would gross her out. :p

Yeah, I hid them from EVERYONE in my house for a few months, well until we had beetles and in a drunkin stuper I showed our party guest as well as my husband who flipped out but I am still able to have them as long as I keep them hidden (in my guest room closet)

LOL. I've been plotting the same, or at least I was til I saw pics of someone's setup online while researching the how to's -- GROSS!! I don't think I can handle that. But earthworms might find themselves residing under the sink someplace.... I can only imagine being a guest in someone's house, opening up the closet to put my stuff in for the night, and..... :p
