Arizona Chickens

OK. I just got home from work, and I went to open the run door so my girls could come out and play.

I know I am going to spell this wrong, but I have five wyendots(sp) and two RIRs in this coop/run chicken tractor.

One of them laid her FIRST egg. I brought it in to show it to Phottoette, and she doesn't understand my happiness. It's a tiny egg, just a little more than two US Quarters placed side by side. I'm sure this is from the only bantam I have, one of the wyendots. (OK, go ahead and make fun of me) I just wanted chickens at the time I bought these, and they looked 'cute.' And I don't know one breed from another, except the RIRs are so HARD to miss as anything OTHER than RIRs.

AAAAAWWWWW!!!!!!! It is soooooooo cute! Sometimes the full size pullets lay very small first eggs too at first. You'll just have to see if you can catch anyone in nesting box this weekend. Also, this website has great breed info you can investigate-lol

Actually, this wasn't even in the nesting box. It was in a very hard to reach part of the run, under and w-a-y back under the coop. I was on hands and knees, with a rake, doing my best to NOT break this egg.

But, we, or they, live and learn. I am now looking for a plastic rake so I can reach any that get laid back that far again. I finally learned, turn the rake upside down, and you have a better chance of recovering that egg, Dummy.

And I think I forgot to mention, this is THE FIRST EGG out of ANY of these girls. BUT I am now, 1 for 8 (smile).

Congrats on the first egg! Every day is egg-citing to see what is in the box. Do you have golf balls or plastic eggs in their nest boxes? They seem to think that if there is an "egg" in there, it must be a good safe place to lay their egg.

There will be no making fun of spelling as you were pretty close. It is actually spelled Wyandotte.

This is Trixie. She is 18 weeks old today. She is half Ameracauna (mom) and half Bantam Mottled Cochin (dad). Mama Hen Gretchen hatched her from one of the fertile eggs I got from Puffycheeks. I am egg-cited that she squatted today!!! She has been checking out the nest box the past couple days. Hopefully will get an egg in the next few weeks.

I can't believe how large the yolk is compared to the other "regular" size one from my girls. This egg is from my Welsummer. First time it is this large. Clara must be working overtime!!!

Hello everyone,
I am new to this forum and need help.
For almost 2 years I have had chickens and 1.5 years I have a couple of ducks. Today I received a letter from the Town of Gilbert in AZ that I need to remove them from my property. My lot is over 8000 sq ft therefor I believed I could have up to 25 fowl on my property (according to their codes). However in this letter it states I am located in a SF-6 zone. On the one hand cats are considered "free range" and the Town of Gilbert has no control of them. Yet one is not aloud to have free-range chickens HMMMM.

Please if anyone can help me, I feel it is time for local Gilbert back-yard chicken lovers to unite and change town codes. Any help on legal rights I have is very much appreciated. I have two weeks to before my chickens have to go. PLEASE HELP They are my pets and I love them like all my other pets.

Thank you,
sevenrays

Ugh. Such a lousy day. Our A/C is acting up, and with all of this rain, there is a leak in the ceiling. I have no idea how the water got in, since the roof is just fine, but the water is drip, drip, dripping out of the ceiling in the living room. The only good thing is that its fairly cool, so with an extra fan it won't be too hot to sleep tonight.

Check the town code it might have an exception for "exotic pets" you can try and claim them as exotic :D. It's crazy because tons of people have chickens in Gilbert so maybe it is a neighbor turning you in or something.

I feel for you, I would be taking it to city hall if they told me my birds had to go, thankfully city of Phoenix will allow almost anything, I even have a neighbor with camels that we drive past every morning on my way to my sons school.

I like to use a chuck it for throwing dogs tennis balls, they work great for reaching eggs and cradle them plus my dogs are so lazy the chuck it won't be used any other way.
