Arkansas Blue egg layers

Pics
I can see all the work people put into these projects (and I can understand the appeal) so I thought you might enjoy seeing and hearing about the "originals". I like all the Whiting birds I've gotten so far. They've all been good layers and now I'm trying some of his meat birds so we'll see how those are.

Oops - almost forgot - when I say good layers, the blue egg layers started later than the green egg layers. I've gotten probably 4 - 5 eggs/week from the blue egg layers all winter and 5 - 6 eggs/week from the green egg layers. That is without lights but it's been a mild winter here in western CO.

Do you have hatching eggs from either flock?

No. I was thinking of picking thru the chicks at Murdochs and seeing if I could find any roos but haven't made up my mind yet. If I ever do have any I can let you know. I can also check with the Mennonite woman I got these from. She get the chicks when some stores cancelled their orders last spring. She talked about hatching some eggs one time but I'm not sure what she ended up with for roos.

Been reading through the string and am sorry to read about your current crisis Crystal. I am so sorry that you are going through this. Not only is this a loss.for you personally but a potential catastrophe for this breed. I see that several of you out there cant get eggs now and I am willing to try and help out. I currently have a trio from crystal in a breeding pen + one extra cockerel and a pullet split to an ameraucana. The colors are as follows: splash rooster, blue hen both from the original eggs i got from crystal and one splash pullet that is a daughter of the rooster. The split pullet is black. I left the black split in there fo provide some new blood. I can provide a very limited number of eggs for shipping and if someone is close to NJ i could hatch them chicks for pickup. I am not planning on breeding these in large numbers but will keep my pen setup long enough this spring to help out where needed. I will also keep enough males and females to help out again next spring if needed.

Sierra - wish I could get my hens to stand well enough to get a pic like that ! All I get are blurrs or butts !

:)

John - I may take you up on that - depending on how this all works out -as the genetics from yours will not be that close to mine - so a very nice mix to go forward with.

Hope everyone has nice day today ! I've got lots of chores to do as the weather has broken and lots of clean up from our long winter.

I hope you guys keep this project going. It's been a fun one to follow. Here are a couple more pics of my birds and then I'm done because it OT.

My other blue egg layer -

And a couple pics of my two green egg layers -

They'd been raised free range and were kind of flighty when I first got them prior to laying but they all mellowed out nicely and are good to handle now. The green egg layers would be a nice project since they're a bit different than what is typically available and are such good layers. Not that I have time for chicken projects. :)

Crystal i saw this today in the paper, and was curious if it related to your situation?

No. Mine is strictly related to the Avian Influenza threat. My company hasn't had any outbreaks but as it gets closer things get more and more uptight because it is a multi-million dollar industry in Arkansas and could potentially devastate the economy.

I understand the company's position, and they have given us an extension of two weeks. I just can't report to work during that time. LOL
