So I made the decision to get some Sumatras as the final touches on my dream coop. Rosecombs, Spangled OEG bantams and Sumatras are the birds I want to raise and show.

Is it easy to find these birds....NOOOO. I have the Rosecombs, and one pair of Spangled OEG, and now I'm trying to find the Sumatras. Can I find any? Nope, nadda...nowhere to be found.

Now I'm on a wild chase to try and find some and it's driving me nuts. I thought wild chases were reserved for geese.....not chickens.

The part that makes this quest nearly impossible is that I'm in Canada and I haven't been able to find any breeders up here.

Anyway, if anyone has any suggestions I'd love to hear them.

Canada is a big place, where (Province) are you? I have imported horses from Ontario before and it was not hard to do. I imagine chickens would not be difficult.

You'd need to get them from someone who is tested for AI and Pullorium, and what ever vaccinations are required by your gov't. Then have them inspected at your port of entry where a vet is stationed.

Livestock crosses all the time from Canada into the US, swine, cattle, etc. It must also go the other way.

Yeah but it costs a bunch to import chickens, or even eggs.

UC, I know that www.performancepoultry.com sells Sumatras (in eastern Ontario, but he will ship). I don't know what quality or source but if you haven't talked to him yet, you might try.

I've been real pleased with the (non-sumatra) chicks I've had from him. I don't anything about how close they are to the Standard but they've been very healthy and happy and so forth.

Good luck,

Pat, who thinks Sumatras are the absolute most gorgeous breed there is, but can't think of an excuse for actually having any myself

It's not so much locating Sumatras in the US, it's finding a breeder willing to go through the shenanigans of getting the proper paperwork. Many simply don't ship across the border.

On a good note though, I may have located someone in Canada that has them! I talked with them yesterday and I was placed on the order list

I'll keep my fingers crossed and see what happens. Even he didn't know of anyone else in Canada with show bloodlines.

I would like to get some from the US too though as I believe in a little bit of out crossing to help strengthen a bloodline.

Aw, I was going to reply and then saw you were in Canada. :-( My aunt has some, but she's not even NPIP so I know she wouldn't go through everything needed to ship to Canada. She has blacks and a few blue hens so blue throws out every once in a while.
