I did my first candling of 1 egg of my very first attempt at incubating. The candling went fine as I carefully took the egg and flashlight into the darkest room in my house. I saw a network of veins so everything was working. Went to put the egg back in the incubator and my foot caught on the air and I dropped it. I killed my first chick before it even had a chance to grow. I am not sure I want to candle any more of them. Egg is real hard to get out of carpet. At least I know my neighbors eggs are fertilized and will grow into chicks.

That stinks.

dragonchick, accidents happen, don't let this discourage you.

I would recommend, though, that you try hatching at least 4-5 eggs. That way if you have some duds or an accident you've still got other eggs developing. Being as these eggs are not shipped ones you should have a good hatch rate. I would think you would want at least 2 chicks to hatch so that they each have some company...3 chicks hatching would be even better.

Get back on the saddle and have another go at it!

Best wishes,
Ed

There are 5 eggs, now 4 with me killing 1 for this hatch. There are 8 more in there that were set 3 days later for an unplanned staggered hatch. I will move the first 4 out into the second incubator I will be setting up for lock down. The second 8 will be locked down in their present incubator and transferred to the other one after they hatch if it becomes crowded. Hopefully I will get through this without any more broken eggs. I am not beating myself up over it as even a hen cracks a few eggs. Next time if I candle an egg I will be sure to move the air out of the way first. I really hate it when it jumps out and trips ya:rolleyes:
