I think maybe you need to start working on your lineart a bit. Not the structure, but more the weight of the lines. I know you were skeptical a certain way of drawing hair, so maybe you're kind of the same way about the whole manga style? A lot of art today is influenced by comic and manga art, so I think maybe that could be the next step for you. Lineart is a BIG deal in those two areas, sometimes the only thing. Check out some tutorials and show me what you come up with!

I doubled my pen size and I'm almost done with a manga like squiggle.

Needs eyelashes at least. Just try what you did before, then lengthen the face. It totally changes how she looks, trust me.
