The waiting IS the hardest part. We have a group of RIRs that are 21 weeks today, and we are still waiting for eggs.
We have one with a BRIGHT red comb the others are red-ish. They are all making this sort of "screaming" noise at me when I go see them with treats. And they are all eating like they are starving! LOL They do go in and out of the nesting boxes and since our Roo is a little bit older we can't use the "they are close to laying age because he's breeding them" because Mr Raging Hormones would mount the water dish if he thought he could..SMH (teenage boy problems).
They are on "finishing pellets" and get lots of fruits, veggies and the occasional bit of meat.
I check every day and give them lots of emotional support...hopefully we'll have some eggs soon.
