My parents found a chick that was starting to hatch in the barn. It currently has a nickle sized hole in the shell. Just a tad bit of blood showing. It's alive, eyes are open, peeping, and moving its mouth. Currently I have it in a small plastic container, in a larger plastic container that has a damp washcloth in it for humidity, with a desk lamp over it for heat. I've given it a bit of water, but I want to know what I can do to help it hatch. Don't want it to die or kill it. Should I make something else to put it in??

We do, but her chicks have already hatched (3 of em) and she has left the eggs. This one must have been laid 2 or 3 days after the others.

It just stopped breathing and died

I feel like it's my fault, 'cause I took some of the shell off.

Kinda traumatizing. One second it's chirping, moving around, trying to get out, and literally the next second it's dead, not breathing, and bleeding.

Poor thing.
