My barbu de watermael rooster Pauli is one year old now and he hasn't jumped on my hens back ever. He obviously loves the girls and has a favorite. He just protects the flock and shows where the food is.

My 6 months old cochin bantams roosters go at it multiple times a day.

Will Pauli start doing it eventually or is never changing? His hens are quite feisty compared to the cochin hens though. I would have loved to have some chicks from him. Does he need more time? Is this a breed thing?

I have to ask how you know he is not doing the deed. I have a Leghorn of similar age who I didn’t think was doing that part of his job until I finally saw him on camera and I have a few eggs in the incubator from hens I know the other rooster isn’t allowed near so I know he’s doing something, he’s just more discreet than my other roo.

Ohhh Well I just never see him do it. Ive never had roosters hide it from me. I shall put up a camera too. Thanks

Yeah I just mean when you crack them to eat. Take a picture of the spot next time and post it so we can help you tell if it’s fertile!

Chances are he is just more discreet than the Cochin roosters. I've had many roosters like that.

If he is not the dominant rooster then he is probably not doing it where the other roosters can see it because they will attack him. Mating rights usually go by pecking order when there are multiple roosters.

He is in a separate pen with his girls and tries to attack the other boys from behind the fence. He acts like the boss in his pen. I would think he just doesnt want me to see.
