Newbie here. We have 18 chicks about 3 months old. My son bought a hen now about 6 months old. Today I found our first egg from the hen. It was on the ground. I thought they naturally went to nesting box. I put the egg in the nesting box hoping she would find it and go there to lay more eggs. Is this the right thing to do? Why didn't she go there to lay her egg? any advise would be appreciated.

She's just figuring things out. Pull the real egg and put fake eggs in the nesting box. Either buy some from a feed store or use golf balls or something similar. She'll get the hint soon enough

Yes..putting eggs into the nesting box is a good idea. It will take her a while to learn.
