Asparagus

We planted asparagus in the spring and let it turn to fern to get established. I am cutting the fern off today and was thinking about giving it to our hens. I am trying to find out if it is something that they can eat. I've read asparagus fern is poisonous, but this isn't the same thing, it's the asparagus stalk that was never picked. Anyone have some info on this for me?

They will probably ignore it so it wouldn't be worth doing, better to compost it.
