Aspirin Dosage!!

How much and how often can I give aspirin?
The dosage according to poultry dvm.com is every 12 hours at 12.5 mg for a 2.5kg chicken (5.5lbs). If however you think there will be a need to escalate the patient to veterinary care level, be aware that aspirin can delay the administration of another NSAID such as Meloxicam.

However, in chicken species, aspirin has a very short half-life of 12.6 minutes (aavac.com.au).

And importantly--never give aspirin if your bird has liver or kidney issues, or if there are visible signs of bleeding--chicken blood volume is quite small and they don't have much to lose, and since aspirin is a blood thinner, it will increase blood loss rate significantly.

Greetings rosemarysugar,

I use aspirin for my chickens. A chicken can safely have up to 120 mg. of aspirin a day. I use a low dose 81 mg. tablet, which I split in half for a 40 mg. dose.

The single 40 mg. dose is for a standard size chicken. A bantam should have 20 mg. for a single dose.

And you can safely administer 3, 40 mg. doses per day, for a standard size chicken.

However, do take into account that aspirin can irritate the intestines, if used long term (more than 3 days). To avoid this, follow with food as a buffer.

Do not use aspirin if there is active bleeding.

Do not mix aspirin with Carprofen, or Ibupropfen as there is a drug interaction, in chickens.

I hope this was helpful.

God Bless :)
I just wanted to thank you, that was very straightforward advice. Our rooster just survived a fox attack but his neck is very strained (maybe broken). He has only very small punctures, so at least that's good. He is eating/drinking via dropper but unable to lift his head in his own at this time. It happened last night.
If you have any suggestions I am all ears.

Sorry to hear this.

I would stay away from aspirin incase of internal injury, aspirin acts as an anticoagulant - stops blood clotting.

Keep him warm and in a dark quiet location, I have used towels to help support their heads, body etc. for any pain and help with shock and stress you can give Tylenol instead.

Tylenol liquid for infants can be used. Dose is 10mg/kg

This one is 80mg/ml so for an average chickie of 2kg the dose is 0.25ml (or a quarter of a ml). There is a handy dosing syringe with this liquid one that has a 0.25ml marking on it.

Good luck and sure hope he is ok. Darn foxes….
