Hi! I've been thinking about a backyard flock for years and finally decided to pull the trigger this spring. I joined because I'm sure I'll have tons of questions once my girls arrive.
I have an order placed for 3 mixed breed hens (picked out by each of my three children ages 13, 7, and 4.5) + 2 ducklings (female). The ducks are more for fun and pest-control than for egg consumption, but we will definitely put those eggs to use as well. I am converting the space under the kids' wooden playset into a multilevel coop with chickens on top and ducks underneath, and putting both in the same brooder, divided into two sections so I can keep the chicks away from the ducklings' water, and make sure the ducklings get separate feed with added niacin. The brooder will be in the house for maximum attention and (supervised) handling and bonding with my kiddos, and then they'll move out to the coop when they're big enough. I live in Cincinnati, OH.
