I have a standard polish pullet who has been looking a little down for the last few days. I've been keeping an eye on her. She had been spending more time on the roost than the others.
Today she was also a bit fluffed and I know something is wrong. I picked her up and something? near her front had an awful, sourish smell. Her crop was full, but not overfilled or hard. Lumpy. No drainage or discharge. Still waiting for poo.
I massaged the crop and broke up the contents. Feels like normal food. I turned her upside down and squeezed it but nothing came out. No water either -- I'm thinking she has not been drinking either.
I can't really tell where the smell is coming from, but it is not the vent. No nasal drainage. Eyes look good. She looks perfect otherwise.
I've been reading the crop problems vinegar etc. It's just not clear cut to me. I don't want to lose her to something else while I'm focused on her crop. None of the other birds are affected that I can tell.

I'm going to make her drink some water and see how it goes. Only 2 symptoms: sour smell and puffed up perching.
Thanks gang!

how is the hen now?

what all do you feed?
what bedding do you use?

describe the droppings in detail..color and consistency.

has she been wormed? if so when? and what was used?

using a small flashlight..check the mouth and throat for whitish or yellowish sores. lesions, or plaque coating.
see if the sour smell is coming from the crop...from the mouth..

recheck the crop in the morning before she eats to see if there are still lumps or doughy mass..

here's some info about crop problems...

thank you
I think she is better this morning -- moving and perked up a bit.
had checked for mouth sores last night, nothing. looks very healthy
gave her water
droppings 2 large normal gray/white dry, no odor. since last night
crop seems empty

the birds are on sand
feed Layena
no worming done

going to work, will see how the day goes. will read the material sent ...thanks sammi!

Some Apple Cider Vinegar won't hurt anything either way. If it's her crop, it should help it resolve more quickly. If it's not, whatever you are smelling might hang around and present other symptoms so you can better diagnose.

I did not have ACV on hand so will have to stop and get some. The sour smell did not seem to be there this morning.
She was good when I left.

Well, the hen is fine. She must have had "indigestion" and was fine once her crop emptied.
I'm probably the guilty party for putting ear corn (dry) in for them to pick at. I think whole corn is too much for a small chicken. I won't be doing that again....

thanks all!
