Alrighty, well...last Friday I gave into the temptation and bought six chicks from TSC. I bought 4 out of the "Pullets" bin and 2 from the "Assorted Straight Run" bin. The 4 from the pullet bin are all close to the same size - one of the orange-ish ones is a bit smaller than the other three. I've been guessing the yellow ones are probably Leghorns and the orange-ish ones are some sort of red...Rhode Island or New Hampshire maybe? The two black ones are from the "Assorted Straight Run" bin and I'm completely lost trying to figure out what they are. At first I thought they were bantams because they were smaller than the others and there were some little Silkies mixed in that bin. The Silkies were much smaller than the other chicks and the manager at TSC said that bin was bantams...but now I'm not so sure.

If that bin wasn't really bantams, I'd guess the one black chick with the white plotch on it's head is probably a male black sex link. Any guess on the other black one? I can try to get a picture of its cutie little face and body if you can't see it well enough to venture a guess from this one.

I know! I went in with my special order form all filled out, the manager called my order in and told me that none of the chicks could ship until May 12th. With all these containers of adorable fluffy chicks right here in the store how could I wait a month and a half for the breeds I thought I wanted?!

I'm hoping the one with the splotch on its head is a Barred Rock chick, fingers crossed for a pullet! But I'm starting to think that sex link is pretty likely.

The reddish ones look like red sex-links(red stars, cinnamon queens etc). The yellow ones could be amber links. I got 5 red chicks and one white one from TSC last spring and my yellow chick turned out to be an amber-link. Sweetest chicken ever! Sadly, she was dinner for a red-tailed hawklast fall:(

The black ones might be Barred Rocks, Red ones looks like red sex links and the others look like buff orps.

Okay, just in case better pictures might help someone identify a breed...and because who could turn down checking out chicky pics.

This one has some yellow/white on its face, wings and belly and has some black on its legs

the first one is an Australorp (w/ black legs) and the other black one is a barred rock (w/ yellow legs), I think. The red may be a sex linked or a RIR. The possibilities are many!

I agree with catdaddy66 on the two black ones. I don't think the 3rd one is a RIR. My RIR chick last year was a more solid color and had a red spot on it's beak. The beak seems a little shorter than I remember on my RIR. I will have more RIR's to compare with in a couple of weeks... The last one looks a lot like my White Leghorn last year. The comb on the white one sure seems developed for such a young chick. Hum...

I was thinking the one chick looked like an Australorp too. The wing feathers on the two yellow ones and one of the orange-ish ones seem a lot more developed than I'd have guessed they would be in a
week old chick. Maybe they're more than a week old? Hard telling I guess. Hopefully things become a little more obvious in the next few weeks.

Ok, I had 16 chicks who were around 7 weeks old. I am a teacher and somehow some of my kids were talking about chicks and I chimed in. So naturally, two sets of parents called and now I am up to 24 chicks.....no more please!

The first two chicks came from TSC and I know one is a black sex-link and it must be within a few days of my other black se-link pullet....and they are amazing! They have that golden color coming through their black chests and the black feathers have a hink of green coming through...super birds...the second chick, dad can't remember what it was except it was "golden something"??? Golden Campine? It has black/brown spots in a line down it's wings.....I am working on a pick....it looks a little like my RIR pullet, but smaller and more gold and less red.

Well, now comes the real trick....what are these? My student called TSC and asked for brown egg laying pullets and then his mother gave them to me....I have six and they are all the same....what are they?
