Assorted Reds from TSC, what are the possiblities?

Quote:
You probably hit it right on both counts.
Remember they are a retail outlet. Their driving focus is to sell stuff, everything from lawnmower wheels to Carhartt T-shirts.
They sell chicks because it brings people in the door to spend money.
I know some of the people who work at our TSC. They are nice people, but are essnetially clueless as "rural supply advisors."
I have little doubt this extends up the management chain.

assorted chicks are cheaper, but sure they get mixed with kids picking them up and putting in the wrong bids.

They mark them the way they come from the hatchery, so if you see straight run sex link Golden comet, or black sex link. you can just buy the pullets.

Most worker there have a hard time telling the breeds apart.

Oh the black sex link chicks, the male have the yellow spot on the head(like a pure BR)

Here are my two week old RIR's from TSC.

Hope this helps.

Ya it appears as if I lost my gamble on getting RIRs big time. I should have been patient and payed the fifty bucks shipping and waited 2 months for online delivary...

I have the same problem; I selected 10 chicks from the assorted reds bin. I was told the five golden chicks I picked are New Hampshire Reds and the five darker chicks are Rhode Island Reds, but I think I actually have three breeds. Now I'm just hoping that the solid gold-colored chicks I have are not sex-link roosters.

Good luck with your chickens.

I have a few photos of mine here (click next to view the other two breeds):

I got 2 RIR's and a Red Star (red sex link) from the TSC "straight run Reds" bin - I was told by the employee that they should be RIR's but I got a sexlink in the bunch.
She started off a bit lighter and I was suspicious then she turned lighter and feathered in with mixed white as she grew. She's the most friendly, sweet chick, somewhat bigger than the others more mature and hen-looking for their age. I call her Queenie because I like her so much. I would have liked a RIR pullet, but I'm very happy so far with Queenie. She's definitely not nasty!!!

The day I got them: Queenie is the one on the feeder, the two darker ones are RIR's

Here's the difference in the coloring at ~25 days old: Queenie is the visible one on the top, RIR on the bottom (left)
