Hello!

I am new to raising chickens and this is my first flock. I have 4 chickens and have recently been trying to fix a big problem of mine. A few months ago I realized that one of my chickens was losing feathers on its butt. At first I thought they were starting to drop their feathers but they never did. Shortly after I realized it was starting with all of my chickens. They lost feathers on their butts and it turned red, looking very tender. Some chickens are worse then others. I have tried everything! I have checked for lice (they don't have it), I have done DE all over the coop, I have done deworming medicine, I have provided them with a sand pit for dust paths, I clean the coop regularly, and they get clean water. They are not pecking each other (I used to have that problem and it was very clear) but since I have extended the coop and given them more free range time the pecking has stopped. We do have a small rat problem that I am currently trying to fix by blocking the food at night and setting up a few traps away from the chickens. Could this be the problem? Overall my chickens appear healthy. They are active and all laying eggs on a consistent basis. Please please please help. I am at a loss.

I am trying my best to get them back to good health and learn what to do. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Here are some pictures to help. These are pictures of the chicken who has it the worst. The rest of the chickens are not nearly as red and just have a few feathers missing.

Possibly. They are on non medicated layer feed. Could they all be allergic to the same thing? What kind of things are chickens allergic to?

Thank you for the information.

We have been using pine shavings since I got them. It seems like that it would be very unlikely to cause a reaction but at this point I will try anything.

Thanks again!

Any other thoughts on what could be causing this?

It looks like it is now causing a drop in egg production. The chicken who has the most red butt is no longer laying eggs. It has been over a week. Any advice? Should I put anti-fungal or hydrocortisone cream?

Please help!

That could work. You might also want to get them tested for a virus, as a drop in egg production my signal a deeper cause behind this.

My plymouth rock has the same and I think it is her scratching because she has lice, which I am going to treat tomorrow...wish me luck. I also have bad mite infestation on the coop floor because of residual water from cleaning the coop.

I would inspect the vent feathers for louse egg sacks. If you see white egg sacks treat her immediately.

Keep us posted.
