At a loss with this one...

Those clean legs and non-black skin eliminate the possibility of any Silkie in the background. Any chicken that had a pure bred Silkie as a parent will have 5 toes/ft, black skin, feathers shanks, and a small crest. All of these are dominant genes. Either your egg seller or your egg hatcher got their wires crossed or are trying to pull a fast one over on ya.

Yep I figured, but considering some of my eggs were also from cochins (the calico frizzles I was supposed to hatch) I couldn't tell.

Now the other chick was a smooth-feathered sizzle for sure, and the seller wasn't who I was worried about. The hatcher on the other hand...well...let's just say I'm going to have to find someone else to incubate my eggs for me -_-

So it's been another week and I'm really thinking rooster now. Now it has long feathers on its neck that kind of curl towards its chest that are thinner than normal feathers. I looked at all of my hens and none of them have those feathers...but my roo does. No saddle or sickle feathers though.

They're like the blonde feathers on this rooster but not quite that exaggerated.

do you have new pics? i see it does have some dark red patches on the wings but they are really hard to see in the pics, those patches could indicate that it is a cockerel...it maybe a black copper marans (not the french type though)

I'm out of town until the weekend and forgot to snap some new pics though. It looks exactly the same as last week except that the feathers at the base of its neck are more prominent (and there are more of them) and the tail feathers are just a bit longer. There are hints of red all over its body, no prominent patches on the wings.

If you click the photos you can make them bigger.

It's a mutant! Doesn't look like a rooster to me, I'm new to this but I've had three batches of chicks we bought and I'm getting pretty good at calling the roosters early, I'm going to have to take pictures of the first one we hatched, I'm positive it's a rooster and he looks like a hawk, LOL

This one is a true head scratcher, but I'm going back to pullet on this one with a very manly tail. At almost 6 months old there are no saddle or hackle feathers, but the two longest tail feathers have a curve at the end like a rooster's.

I guess we'll see if it lays or not! But it's not crowing and the feathers still look feminine besides the tail. So weird!

A face only a mother could love??? ;). Hopefully in a few weeks she will grow into a beautiful swan.... I mean chicken. ( you know what I mean :p)

Haha that's for sure. I really don't like the look of her, but I raised her and she's not hurting anything so I let her hang around as the awkward ugly stepsister. Hahaha

And that little silkie is Piper! She is SO sweet and calm. I just had to trim her fluff again today because she was having trouble seeing. I should take some updates pics of her!
