At last! How to stop your rooster crowing - maybe

We certainly have days when our Rooster crows way, way more than other days. I've done a good job of sound-proofing the hen house with cardboard and insulation, but during the morning, when he is out, he sometimes just starts and goes off every five minutes for two or three hours. His normal habit it to do it in groups of two or three, two or three times a day. When he starts going off like crazy, it's generally due to a few easy to spot things:

1. the hens are laying.
2. there is a predator nearby - some persistent threat such a a cat, a hawk, or a raccoon.
3. His routine has been disrupted. For example, last night, the boy forgot to close up the coop. The chickens figured it out, let themselves out, and Sunshine (our rooster) started crowing and didn't stop for three hours.

He may also crow at random times: Sirens, geese calling overhead, cloud went over the sun, songbird in the yard building a nest, he is startled for whatever reason....you get the idea.

I can generally control the environment enough to keep his crowing to the "natural" occurrences, but for times when I can't figure it out, I just crate him and put him in the basement for a couple hours - this is rare. I hope this helps. Yes, roosters crow. No, they don't crow constantly or at unusual times, for no reason. They have a reason, you just might not get to know what it is, and if you can't figure it out, then message me and we can have a longer discussion about what you might be doing wrong.

Side note to all. Poultry sees & processes light differently than we do, they can see daylight several hours before we do. So while it's still dark out for us, daylight is already starting to shine for them.

I think stopping a rooster from crowing is a real not smart thing to do.. That is totally redonkulas and bordering inhumane. If you don't want a crowing rooster, don't own a rooster. Simple at that. Cook em up, or give them away, but don't try to keeping them from crowing.

That's like trying to get a hen to quit laying eggs because you don't like eggs... Say WHA?! Bizzare.
For some of us it is not just a good morning it is anytime of the day and over and over and over and over again. My little bantam boys LOVE TO CROW anytime and for any reason for however long they feel like it. And my Bantam boys have very powerful lungs.
