At what age can my chicks spend the day outside?

Hi,

I have 3 4week old buff orpington chicks that we've kept inside in a brooder. They've had short visits outside, but boy are they getting big quick. I'm wondering at what age it's ok to let them spend the day outside. I live in Northern Vermont and the outside air temp can fluctuate from the high 50's to the 80's. I have a coop and hen house they can stay in outside, but I haven't quite had the nerve to leave them alone (in a pen, safe) for the day.

At what ages are people letting their chicks spend the day outside?

You can put them out now. I usually allow mine some outside time when they're 2 weeks old as long as the weather is warm.

They'll let you know if they're cold cuz they'll all huddle together. Then you can bring 'em back inside.

Also, make sure they have a bit of shelter from direct sunlight.

They will LOVE to forage around in the grass and dust bathe in the dirt!!!

Mine stayed outside in the run all day when they were 4 weeks old on a weekend when I was able to supervise. ( I may be a tad bit over protective ) I just made sure it was a good weather day. I work full time and they are currently 'cooped' up this week because we've been getting terrible, cold and rainy weather. I don't know if they are ready to manuever the ramp to get in and out as they like.

I am a sucker - I have 4 6 week old chicks, put mine out all day in a run, and still bring them in. The nights are chilly.

I dont use a light or anything inside. I figure its good practice because when I bring them in at dusk they line up like toy solders and go right to sleep.

I hope in the next week to have them out full time.
