At what age does a chick become a pullet?

From my understanding, a pullet is from chick age to one year old. After that, it is called a hen.

Someone would know for sure!

A pullet is a female under 1 year of age
a hen is over 1 year of age.
A cockerel is a male under 1 year of age
a rooster is over 1 year of age.

We'll call them chicks until about 2 months old, then pullets till they start laying and once laying they have earned the name hen.

So they are pullets from the get-go. Who knew?

Thanks for explaining. I'm officially referring to my girls as pullets from now on, as I think of chicks as little fluffballs, not beady-eyed pigeon-sized month-olds!

I LIKE Rootball's post:

Religion can play a large part with their varied coming of age ceremonies

Ha-Ha,

I can imagine that different Chicken religions would dictate different "coming-of-age" scenarios.

It could get somewhat confusing and PROBABLY start some Chicken Wars!

We had a state 4H poultry show back in May. At the quiz bowl they said that a female chicken is a pullet until it has been laying eggs for six months; then it's a hen. I'd never heard that before.

A chick is always a pullet.

But a pullet is not always a chick.

Glad I could clear this up for you.
